Thank you so, so, so, much deltaforce. This is what I need.
No worries, when you get expert, please pay it forward.
He prescribed her Prednisone. On the bottle its has a step down schedule over four weeks, starting with 40 mg a day for 7 days, then 30 mg for 7 days, 20 mg for 7 days, then 10 mg for 7 days.
I am not happy with last part. She can take the way the guy says, but once she reaches 20mg, taper by 5mg each week. One she reached 10mg, taper by 2.5mg/week. So it will go like this,
20mg, one week,
15mg next week,
10mg next week,
7.5mg next week
5.0mg next week
2.5mh next week.
This is safe approach. Prednisone is not a drug that you play with. It can mess your adrenal glands a big time.
Once she starts prednisone, she will start eating like someone who did not eat in years. Make sure, she eats very soft food, rice and similar. No pop corn or rough food. No raw vegetables.
She is also still taking Sulfasalazine and Hyoscyamine (Levsin).
I understand that the sulfasalazine is an 5-ASA and it is meant to reduce the swelling in the colon.
She told me the Levsin is to help with the bloating. Is this also to help reduce the contractions (it sounds like it might be from the drug used I have read)? If not, is there something that can?
She has also been given pain meds, but she is hesitant to take them often for some reason. Or maybe it just happens that every time I walk in the door it has worn off because she is always moaning loudly like she is in labor. She takes it when I show up and half hour to 45 minutes later she is doing better. She has tramadol, oxycodone, and another oxy one I didn't get to take a pix of. Does one work better than the other?
NO, she does not need Oxycodone. She will throw up, most likely, guessing her condition. Been there, done that. Bentyl is her best choice. Take 325mg Tylenol and 20mg Bentyl 3X a day. It will fix problem of pain and repeated restroom visits.
Sulfasalazine will take a long time to act.
When she starts Sulfasalazine, do not start at full dose, what is her dose, BTW? Start with least possible tablet 3X a day. LIke if her dose is 3gm/day, start with 500mg 3X a day and then work way up, else she is going to have a REALLY bad headache. I cried like a baby for 3 days and Oxycodone did not work at all. Seriously, ramp it up slowly or she is going to have worse time of her life. I don't know about
Levsin. Talk to the GI and ask about
Bentyl. Use commonly used drugs, so that we can help you and your mom. if someone else has used it, they will surely chime in.
Ask for rectal medications. Find out where her inflammation is from the GI who did colonoscopy and says UC.
She said she has not been pooping because of the liquid diet- only mucus has been coming out.
Right, She has a lot of urge to defecate, but there is nothing to. Its fine even if she stays on liquid diet for a while. But she MUST eat that diet too.
She is starting to eat some again. Yesterday she has chicken noodle soup and yoghurt.
Skip yogurt, if you can.
Can I do this now? -or should I wait until she is not i so much pain
"Ask for a rectal medication, like hydrocortisone enema and then Mesalamine enema. Use only Hydrocortisone enema for first month, then hydro* in the morning and mesalamine at bedtime for a month and finally taper off hydro* and continue with mesalamine only."
NOW. Also, depends on
location of inflammation.
I am going to talk to her about the getting the blood work done.
Yes. She must be in pretty bad state. Its better if you do it soon, but if she can not stop visiting restroom, then she can not go for a blood draw and then it can wait.
Underscore this on your and your mom's brain. This is a VERY tricky disorder, you have to walk a fine line. Literally, EVERYONE is different. One person will suggest you something and the next person will say that it doesn't work with them, but both are true. You will learn this, if you go through older threads here. And YOU should remember this too. There are few members here, whose parents have/had IBD, including me.
