Here is a show I though others on here might be interested in watching tomorrow. It's 7pm Eastern Time. Canadian Network though - but if you come back to the website later after airing they always have all the past episodes playing and available through download.

The Nature of Things, The Allergy Fix:
Here is a link to the preview:
www.cbc.ca/natureofthings/episodes/the-allergy-fix

-----------------------

In the link above it says a startling statistic:

"North American kids: more than three times as many children have food allergies now than twenty years ago. And one out of every three children is now allergic to foods, animals, or plants. Something puzzling, and frightening, is going on with our immune systems.

Looks like it will deal with the hygiene hypothesis etc...

Interestingly I was asked to go to a birthday party for a good friend that I have not seen in a few years. He's my age. On the invitation all of a sudden it says "snacks will be provided that are wheat free, dairy free, nut free and no oranges please"... Somehow he has developed allergies to these over the last 3-4 years.

Crazy... He's not a kid.. he's an adult that randomly developed these.

Here's an interesting link from the same website showing the most prevalent allergies worldwide by country:

I didn't even know a "beef" allergy existed...

Good find. I'll give it a look when I get the opportunity.

Just about every other kid I know has allergies to something now, which is very odd to me. The up to date research indicates that it is not genetic, but more microbial. The hygiene hypothesis does seem to explain why this is happening, but it remains largely unacknowledged by the mainstream medical establishment. It definitely has something to do with the absence of critical bacteria that are responsible for the assimilation of environmental agents (toxins, ingredients, etc). We're almost certainly missing something today that existed in the past.

This is kind of why it's so freaking easy to pick up infections in hospital settings. They are continuously sanitized to hell and then repopulated with the bacteria of ill people. Would love to see more trees and plants as a measure to reduce this problem.

Sadly, allergies are actually turning out to be pretty good predictors of future autoimmunity and disease risk. We definitely need to take note of this and make changes in our environment. When I was in elementary school, we ate everything freely and without issue, but things are vastly different today going by the data alone.

This made me think about the hygiene hypothesis too. For the first three years of having this disease there was always off and on topics of people trying helminthes with a good deal of success. It doesn't seem like there have been any people coming on here lately who have tried them.

I do know there was a study not too long ago that had less than impressive results.

To add to this, I wasn't able to catch much of this on npr but it is about the rise of gluten free diets, gluten intolerance, etc:

I totally agree, but probably not for the same reason as you. A view of trees, grass, and flowers outside my hospital window would have raised my spirits. What I actually got was this:

I'll also take a properly sanitised hospital, thanks. I like not dying of avoidable infectious diseases.

Edit: As for the increase in allergies, I suspect it closely parallels the increase in health-anxious, middle-class parents. I don't have any allergies and nor do most people I know: hayfever is about as bad as it gets. I doubt we have superior immune systems really (I most certainly don't), so there are other factors at play here.

Since the episodes are available in Canada only, anybody willing to record and share it?

Hey Delta - The weblink to the full episode is up now:

www.cbc.ca/natureofthings/episodes/the-allergy-fix

If for some reason you can't view it let me know and I'll see if I can figure out another way to get it to you. It was really very interesting. I took notes! haha... I can post them as well if the link doesn't work.

I checked that link and it never played. I tried 3 different browsers.

Plus, the footnote says "Episode available within Canada only. Video help?"
