Back in 2002, I was diagnosed with a uterine fibroid. At that time, it was around 6.4 cm in diameter. I kept putting off surgery for two reasons: I didn't think that my fibroid was that big a deal, and I wasn't planning on kids anyways. I was also afraid that surgery might set off my ulcerative colitis. Well, in 2012, I had an ultrasound done. (Had many prior to that), and the bugger grew to 12 cm. Didn't bother me much, though, other than more bleeding but I was never aniemic. (sp)? Anyways, I opted for a robotic assisted myomectomy. I only had the tumor removed. Mind you that prior to surgery I was enjoying a pretty good remission only on Asacol 400. Well, had my surgery on Sept 18, 2012. Lasted six hours. I experienced an explosive diarrhea episode in recovery, the nurses had to clean me up. By the time I got situated in my cozy room, (it was a nice room!), I had to poop again. Loose D with no blood. Had it again an hour later. By then I was able to get up and go to the bathroom on my own. More loose D. They gave me my Asacol and things settled down.
By the time I got home things were OK, a pretty uneventful recovery despite a fever for a couple of days. Well, as the months went by I had to poop EVERY morning upon awakening. I even pooped before my morning tinkle. Some days, it was rather explosive, but no blood. I stayed on my Asacol. I told my GI about it and he said that things get "moved around" during surgery, and he prescribed an anti-spasmodic. Well this continued off and on till May 2013. Then I did the Delzicol switch. Worst flare of my life. I think it was the surgery and my meds being discontinued. Bloody D, evacuating in my pants first thing in the morning, horrible left sided pain.
Well, after two trips to the ER, my GI prescribed a 40 mg pred taper and Asacol HD. Blood went away, but still having copious loose, SMELLY bm's. Down to 10 mg pred and holding, switched to Lialda. Today I pooped my pants AGAIN when I woke up, plus I NEVER had to go at night, which I do occasionally. Left sided cramps, gurgling, I'm miserable. I have never been this sick with colitis in my life. I did have a scope in July that showed NO inflammation, but I was still on higher doses of pred. Took Flagyl, made D worse and stinkier. I take 1 Azulfidine to firm up my stool just a bit. Can't take to much sulfa, although it works GREAT for me. Makes me nauseous.
I'm seriously wondering if I have a major gut flora imbalance. I did take Cipro for a few days, and it worked but couldn't stay on it. I have had stool tests, but I know that they only test for certain kinds of bacteria. Right now, I am in bed, nauseated, afraid to eat. I can't go on like this much longer, oh and had to poop first thing in the morning AS USUAL. So frustrated. Gets worse with my monthly bill, too. I am currently teetering between 7.5 and 10 mg pred. My question is, why all of these mushy, non bloody STINKY stools? Help!
