It is my own fault. I missed two nights of Rowasa in a row and now I'm flaring. Hey, give me a break, I just started dating a new guy and haven't brought up the fact I have to shove meds up my butt nightly yet, and I happened to be spending the weekend at his house. :(

I started hydrocort enemas last night without doctor's guidance. I have three weeks' worth at home. I'm only having mild symptoms at this time. I really shouldn't have skipped the Rowasa...

I think you'll get back to a good place in no time. Sorry for the reality check.

I'm so sorry to hear that Sara14!

When you say mild symptoms - what are you having? Could it just be a couple bad tummy days?

Thanks guys.

Totes: Nah, I can tell it's the UC. Pain and contractions-esque cramps (I've never had a kid but it's what I imagine contractions feel like) when I'm having a BM, some urgency, and a bit of gurgling tummy at times. It isn't constant though and I still feel *almost* normal most the time so I am hoping it will go away quickly. No blood or mucous or "D" so that's all good and only minimal bathroom trips.

I don't know if I should have put myself on these steroid enemas or not. Last time they didn't work, but I was also much, much worse off that time.

I would try them and see how it goes for a few days. It can't hurt right. Whatever its takes to stop it from porgressing. Have you called your doctor?

Maybe you want to add in a suppository during the day? Urgency would mean rectal inflammation right?

No, I haven't called the doc. He'll just suggest imuran which I want to avoid until I have no other choice. He was shocked that I would rather do Rowasa nightly than go on Imuran. If it gets bad, I'll request pred. It got me into remission last year. Suppositories don't do anything for me. I could add Rowasa in the morning but I don't know... thanks for the suggestions!

I hated being on 6 mp. And what ended up getting me into remission was Pred, Lialda and nightly Rowasa. Doctor said the same thing to me about the Rowasa. And suppositories seem to upset my stomach more than help and I hate the oil gas.

Yeah Rowasa in the morning is always iffy. If I get the urge for gas when I use them at night I have to hold it in until I don't think I will "leak". LOL.

I hope it leaves as quickly as it came.

Thank you! It probably will be fine, but it's just so scary when it comes back.

Suppositories do the same thing to me. They just create an oily mess. I wish the doctors were more open to Rowasa. So many people could be helped and spared side effects that often come along with the more "hardcore" drugs if doctors would suggest Rowasa. I never would have even heard of it if not for this forum. At this point, with as little inflammation as I have, I can hold in Rowasa during the day easily. I just don't want to overload my colon with more drugs than necessary and irritate it (I don't know that that would happen but that's my thought process).

This forum has taught me so much. And yes I am terrified of it coming back too. I may even have a little inflammation now. I can't decipher what is going on at the moment. I have a GI appt in a coupld weeks and may ask for a flex sig. I've only flared once, it lasted 15 months and started when I was pregnant so I have NO clue what to look for.

If you can hold the Rowasa during the day I would try that with the steroid at night. From what I understand the Rowasa is like aspirin for the colon so it can't hurt!

My personal opinion is that 6-mp/Imuran aren't as bad as Predisone which I believe have some of the most side-effects out of all of our meds. Yes, some of the other meds (6-mp/imuran) have very scary side-effects and they rarely happen but Predisone has the most side-effects, fastest acting and even cosmetic side-effects.

6-mp worked very well for me for a couple of years, yes I was a little more tired than normal but that was about it.

You know, in my humble opinion.....missing two nights in a row doesn't really "start" a flare...it's been there all along and it just kinds of reared it's ugly head because of the missed doses, that's all.

I personally, and we all probably do, seem to ignore our symptoms the longer we have this disease and tend to blame it on anything other than us ignoring it..like we missed a dose. Plus, even when we 'think' we feel well, if we ask any un-impaired bowel person..we are really screwed up gastrointestinally ALWAYS!! Our 'normal' isn't even close to the real world's normal I think.

My perfectly healthy wife poops like every 3 days...WHAT THE HOLY HELL?!?!? Where do we sign up??

I suppose it's all a matter of semantics, but I;m trying to make it sound less your fault than it is. You didn't start a flare as much as your body was already kind of in one but being held in check of symptoms by the meds. It takes more then a few days to really start a good flare.

stop beating yourself up! It was there always, it just was always there and popped up because you missed a dose, it wasn't caused by it....be well!

Ugh, sorry Sarah, that blows. Hopefully the steroid enemas will put you back in remission. I am also in the nightly Rowasa club and would be in trouble if i missed.

I'm not really understanding why, if you are blaming the missing of two nights in a row of Rowasa for bringing on a flare, why didn't you just return to the Rowasa?

Thanks guys!

Gary -- I did for a week and it wasnt really helping. I dont know. Im scared.Thats kinda why I posted here...looking for advice/thoughts/etc.

To the person who talked about pred side effects -- not everyone gets them, I didnt get any. I sure was scared crapless to take it though due to this forum.

Scott - True but all of us are kept in remission due to our meds. Sadly, it was my fault. Ive missed a day before and symptoms returned every time. I could not taper like I could in the past.

Also Gary I think Im now past the point where rowasa nightly can get me out of this. Thats why I took the steroid enemas. Wishi couldt take some leftover pred i have in the cabinet. I understand imuran isnt bad for everyone but i want to keep as many future options in my pocket as possible. We only have so many options before surgery.

Hmmm, time varies with Cortifoam. I do it until my flare settles (again, time varies) and than I will trade off with steroid sups. I am always simmering so cortifoam is used more than I would like. However, BBC, a member here goes to a top GI doc , Dr. Maria Abreau who said Cortifoam can be used 2times a week for maintenance. Just FYI. Good luck.

Thank you. I wish I had cortifoam. I have hydrocort enemas that hurt like hell. It just stopped hurting 40 min after I administered it.

Hi there. I feel like any enema hurts when you have inflammation . As you heal they stop being uncomfortable. I am down to 1 or 2 cortenemas a week and doing pretty good!

@ Scott, pooping every three days is far from normal, I would be worried if I held toxins in my body that long.

op, just be good to your gut and get back on you nightlys :-)

Im not.anywhere close to going on imuran and its just plain untrue that prrd makes your bones frail if youre on a short course of it. The one time I was on it was for about 7 weeks and I had zero trouble getting off it.
