Hi..you're most welcome. I know rectal meds (both 5ASA and steroid/supps and enemas) can be an issue with some and are never suggested by some doctors, but it's a point of contention I (and others who use them) have on a continuing basis. If you can use the mesalamine, go for it.
I guess if one doesn't have any side effects from the mesalamine, the max depends on one's need to heal.
You are on the max oral...maybe eventually you can drop slowly to the next lower dosage which is 3600mg once you're more stable rectally. Especially since you're on the Imuran with no problems.
You could try the 4g for a month nightly and then get back onto the 2g between tapering the 4g.
You could just get the 2g and use the supps in conjunction to concentrate the dosage.
Start somewhere and go up or down from there if you have the OK with your doc (willing to write the 'script
s) that you're wanting to try different rectal regimens.
What you do want to do is get it controlled and taper to a maintenance, but not weekly...twice weekly should be good with a lower dosage.
It's possible that the foams allow the mesalamine to be more effective than the liquid, or vice versa or they're the same. Remember as well, you could ask for a steroid suppository to use in conjunction with the other supps, or alternate.
There are lots of possibilities....
You've obviously come a long way from your initial severe pancolitis. With a recent proctitis flare, it's a obvious that something's working.
*Heather* I give suggestions, do with them what you will.
