Hi all,

First post! Thanks to all of you for creating such a great community - I've been reading threads for a while and it's been very helpful both educationally and in putting my mind at ease...

I was diagnosed with pancolitis just over two months ago, in the middle of my first ginormous flare (pretty sure I had small flares before now that I look back, but nothing that needed medicating or stopped me from living normally). I was put on Asacol immediately, and it took a while before I figured out that I needed something stronger. Am now toward the end of a prednisone taper (currently 12.5mg down from 40mg, went down to 10mg but had to come back up) and am taking Apriso x 4 daily. I also started on the SCD about 5 weeks ago, and I've felt drastically better since.

My problem - even with the prednisone, I have been losing huge amounts of weight (for me). This was understandable before BM activity was under control with the pred, but I feel like now there's no excuse! Is this a common problem with the SCD?

I went in to my GI the other day and he freaked out about my weight (well, I did too, to be honest). I am 5'6" and currently weigh 98lbs. I'm a pretty small person, my 'normal' weight that I gravitate to is somewhere around 115-120lbs. I've lost about 10lbs in the last month. Since my last step down on the pred didn't take so well (personally, I think this was due to some over-ambitious consumption of uncooked greens a day or two beforehand), my GI thinks that I'm only partially responsive to the pred and has said that if I don't get my weight going back up by the next time I see him - in a week and a half - then he wants to put me on Remicade. I find this a little drastic, but I understand it at least has the potential to work quickly. I would prefer to try Imuran etc first before getting into the biologics but I'm concerned that if I keep losing weight that I might get into some real trouble before it starts working.

So I guess I'm wondering a few things - anyone have good ideas for gaining weight on SCD? I'm even tempted to break the diet for a while and consume some serious starch if that's what it comes to, I just feel so much better on the diet. I'm trying to stay away from nut-based recipes for a while until my gut calms down again from the little fit it had on my last pred step down. Also, is my GI going overboard with the Remicade idea at this point? It seems to me that Imuran & co. have been around a lot longer and are just kind of generally less scary.

Sorry for the long-winded post but I guess I've been saving it up! Thanks everyone for your help :)

Yeah. SCD can do that to you. Sometimes I think the SCD diet doesn't work as well as people think because when you eat less you poop less, giving you the illusion that the diet is making your UC better when it is actually just the lower food intake. I can see why the doctor was in a panic. You don't have much to work with. People that know diets better than I do might be able to give you some good tips if you are wanting to stay on the diet.
Pentasa (500mg) 2 pills X 2; steroid ointment; VSL 1 pill X 2; Prescrip Assist Probiotic 1 pill X 2; Lactobacillus Rhamnosus 1 pill X 2; Grape seed extract 400mg X 2; 1 Vitamin D3 5000 IU; Daily antihistamine; Canasa as needed; DAO as needed due to dietary histamine intolerance

Gave me trouble: Zymactive, Renew Life Probiotic 80 billion, Florastor, high histamine foods

Try to eat more of the scd foods, always eating and snacking. If that doesn't work and you continue to lose weight then you need to change eating plan. I lost too much weight from being sick and on paleo. I had to add starches back in. I found out that my gut likes cheap crap white flour, go figure. When I was trying to gain weight I baked a lot. Muffins, zuccini breads, etc etc. lots of bananas apple sauce and other nutrients packed in them. Also lots of good proteins and fats.
Asacol 2.4 g/day Elavil 25mg/day. Salofalk supp, every other night. Probiotic (ultimate flora 50billion) 4 Metamucil caps/day. Colonoscopy (dec2013)showed inflammation/ulcers 25-50cm area only, pathology didnt indicate ibd. flex sig (feb2014) chronic inflammation, rectum only. GI calling it indeterminate IBD. IBS-D for 10+ years, diagnosed by verbal symptoms only, questioning that now.
