What is scary is the doctor and every web site I read states that Ulcerative Colitis is still not fully understood, not only for adults but especially kids and what causes it in kids. Med students and Doctors are trained to prescribe medication for sickness instead of curing the sickness. "Treating symtomes instead of curing the problem."
mysickkid - if the patient here was an adult we could spend a lot of time talking about
what ifs and how about
this or that? But the patient is a 9 year old girl who needs a functioning gut in order to grow to be a healthy adult. Don't mess with experiments where you take her off meds to "see what happens." What might happen is that she gets so sick she loses her colon, or misses her growth spurt.
Medicine is an art, not a science, as most of us have sadly come to learn. Doctors "practice," they don't always (or even often) know everything. But they do know how to get the inflammation to go away and how to make it stay away for many of us, and that is a good thing.
One day we will be able to stop this inflammatory disease at its source, but that day is not today.
