Here is my story. I am a 51 year old man and generally of good health.
I developed hemorrhoids after a fracture of my t6 vertebrae from an auto accident about 15 years ago. The roids got progressively larger over the years.
January 2013- I became stopped up. Couldn't push out any stool...after a few days, I tried really hard and the roids were very inflamed. Couldn't even squeeze out a fart. It was a horrible time. bloody constipation & diarrhea. I went on a low residue diet and dropped about 30 lbs.
I saw a gastro doctor and after the colonoscopy, was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis (pan) and put on prednisone & Apriso (.375 x 4 daily).
The symptoms went away completely and I improved my diet and life was good for about 4 weeks and then I was stopped up again. The Apriso was ineffective.
I went to see a colorectal surgeon and had two ligation procedures (rubber bands). The first was beneficial, and he also prescribed the suppository version of mesalamine (canasa) but a month later I was stopped up again...the second procedure which was about February of 2014- and after a short recovery time...my bathroom experience were 100% improved. At that time I also went gluten free. All symptoms were gone, and the stools were perfectly normal. (much better than before the problems even began).
So since that time, I have gotten into shape, working out at the gym regulary. I am 6'2" and before all of this my weight was 215lbs. I am a bit lighter than I want to be at the moment (164lbs) but have been swapping the fat for muscle and have made a lot of gains in that department. I eat a high protein diet.
A few months ago, I felt a dull sensation on my left abdomen a few inches below my lower rib. I became concerned and went back to the gastro doctor- he was kind of ticked to hear that I haven't been taking any drugs for about about a year. (I didn't realize it was a lifelong drug). He said that I am at a higher risk of cancer and re-prescribed the Apriso. I asked if another colonscopy was worthwhile, and he said he knew what I had and it wasn't needed.
Being the hard head that I am- I didn't fill the script. Lately I am taking just one Apriso (.375) per day when the sensation returns, and then the sensation disappears. These were the last few pills I had from the old bottles from 1 1/2 years ago. I also have a bunch of leftover canasa that I haven't used.
I inquired w/ the pharmacy and I'll need to drop $350 to buy a new refill of Apriso. (they get cheaper as my deductible gets paid off but still pricey). The online Rx stores aren't much cheaper.
My reasons for not wanting the meds is that the symptoms like blood, diarrhea, etc are long since gone, and I have good stool functions. (concern over possible side effects)
So that is my story- I am wondering if anyone else has felt that dull sensation or has any comments in regard to my situation. Thanks
