For me in a flare it's a combination of both. Hard stools that I gave to strain with but still have that flare feeling of having to go all the time. So I take the fiber to soften it. Helps the straining.
In remission it's more along the lines of just hard stools and straining.
Same for me! I still manage to get BM's out (thankfully) but they have the classic appearance of constipated looking stools, round little hard balls that are incredibly difficult to get out, lots of straining and sometimes the longer/bigger formed stool(s) that when you look at them, you can see all the little hard balls are attached to one another making it look like one big stool.
As seen here in the Bristol stool chart/scale link I posted below, mine look like #1, 2 and 3 (but have definitely had all the other stools on the chart and some that are even off the chart, like my very own special stools, ha I feel so special...NOT!!

I'm in remission with my crohn's colitis but I have IBS alternating, mainly constipation though/constipated looking stools...sometimes my stools are just small bits (also hard to pass) and sometimes they come out looking very good but no matter what they look like, I'm pretty much always straining to get them out even if they look like normal shaped and sized stools, and sometimes even when it turns into D I still have some straining at some point during diarrhea stools.
DX with Crohn's Disease in 1991 shortly after becoming ill. CD was affecting small and large bowel & anus (perianal crohn's skin tags) & rectum for first 2 yrs of becoming sick, CD remained constant in colon (Crohn's colitis) & anus with anal tags, intolerant to oral meds. Currently on Humira (Feb 2014) once a week and B12, Vitamin A and Omega's daily. In remission but trying to combat IBS D/C.
