I had joint pain that was much worse than my bowel symptoms but was clearly a part of my inflammatory bowel disease. DRs believe but have no scientific evidence that the joint pain mirrors bowel inflammation, like Red said. I can say that my joint pain seemed random and unconnected to increases or decreases in bowel symptoms, but that once I achieved a solid remission of my bowel disease my joint pain has not reappeared.
I also changed my treatment protocol to directly address the joint involvement by adding sulfasalazine to my pill box. This is an old arthritis med that also treats colitis, and GIs have found that using this med for IBD patients with joint pain is a win/win.
