my rectum has been bothering me since colonoscopy prep/scope. my gi said i have an inch of my anus inflamed and the rest of my rectum/colon/terminal ileum is fine. i had been doing so well after i got off vancomcyin for c diff and then the prep again just killed my bumholey

is there anything i can do to get rid of this inflammation? i am mesalamine intolerant so i was thinking i'd make some homemade suppositories but i dont even know what to use- maybe coconut oil and aloe. i tried preparation H and used the insertion tip and my rectum was on FIRE. there must be something in it that is really irritating.

i'm just getting depressed about it. i didn't have this problem until i did my colonoscopy prep and now every bm is so urgent. i keep sharting/getting crap in my underwear even though i'm having solid BMs. i just took my simponi shot a few days ago and it doesn't seem to be doing anything to help.

been wearing pads and depends just to leave the house and i hate it.

i'm open to any suggestions you guys have. i can't believe such a tiny amount of inflammation could cause me this many problems.

Why wouldn't your GI give you rectal meds to help with the anal inflammation? (I find it curious that you would have any anal inflammation that is related to UC though since UC is limited to the rectum and colon) for my perianal crohn's skin tags (after the fact) I was told if I hadn't had surgery done on them (having them banded as they were mistaken for hemmies) that rectal meds (cortifoam specifically) would have likely help shrink up my perianal crohn's skin tags.
DX with Crohn's Disease in 1991 shortly after becoming ill. CD was affecting small and large bowel & anus (perianal crohn's skin tags) & rectum for first 2 yrs of becoming sick, CD remained constant in colon (Crohn's colitis) & anus with anal tags, intolerant to oral meds. Currently on Humira (Feb 2014) once a week and B12, Vitamin A and Omega's daily. In remission but trying to combat IBS D/C.

Wonder if anucort suppositories would help. I find them to be very "soothing" and used them after my scope. Of course a week later I moved on to enemas but it doesn't sound like you need those.

I agree with mom2boys, you should try hydrocort suppositories.

Thanks for your suggestions, guys!

I saw my gi a week before my scope and since things were going well, i think he figured my butthole was inflamed from the prep when he saw it during the scope. He said it is literally the very end- the entrance of my butthole and i can totally feel it even though it looks normal from the outside. He didnt mention doing any rectal meds at all- he added singulair and welchol to my meds.

Sadly, i have to wait til Tuesday to call cuz i assume the office is closed for memorial day. My mom got me a sitz bath for my toilet that i will try. Luckily, im only going 1-3x per day so its not getting much action down there anyway but when i do go, its "get the fudge out of my way now!!!!"

I agree with the others about steriod supps. I would try to call and see if they have someone on call that could help you?

I asked a question somewhat similar a while back. Even though my symptoms are quite good I seem to have this stubborn inflammation at the anus itself (my diagnosis). Suppositories don't do much for it because they seem to get sucked in past the inflammation. I have some luck using a steroid ointment directly on the area itself but it never seems to heal 100%.

Gave me trouble: Zymactive, Renew Life Probiotic 80 billion, Florastor, high histamine foods

Weird, the only type of anal issue one with UC would have would be fissures, perianal crohn's skin tags are an example of "inflamed anus" but that doesn't happen with UC, what exactly does your guy's inflamed anus look like?

Haven't actually "seen" mine but it is and feels red and irritated and is sore. Several doctors have commented on it but I have never actually looked at it myself. I also have a hemmie which is IMMEDIATELY inside but that just seems like an additional problem. To me, it reminds me of a baby's diaper rash but actually on the anus itself.

Ah, if there's a hemmie that explains it.

My ultimate cure, and it always works for me - I do it daily - is water, then witch hazel (on tissue), and again and again till clean, then some Vaseline to super clean it. The witch hazel is amazing and I never have any irritation.

Definitely agree that you should ask for the pred foam enema. You'll find it zaps that tiny bit of inflammation in about 3 days.

gary, yeah, mine might be an internal hemmie but i'm not sure. my gi wrote "clinical remission of UC" on my papers i took home last week. i was so out of it after my scope that i wasn't really comprehending everything he said or asking questions. i looked at the pictures of my anus/rectum and they aren't ulcerated or red/bloody. the entrance picture is just a little swollen inside. i agree that the suppositories might even go too high up!! i know the enemas would surpass it completely so i wouldnt ask for those.

pb4, i thought the anus was part of the rectum?? honestly, when i put a mirror down there, it looks totally normal. it's not swollen or red.

i had a normal poop today with no urgency or pressure thankfully. i do love using witch hazel on that area when it's sore, too, arizonahiker. i'm a big fan of A&D ointment and baby wipes. i rarely use regular toilet paper anymore. i like keeping it moist down there.

Nope, it is it's own thing lol, you can get anal cancer or rectal cancer, far as I've ever understood they are two separate parts of the GI tract that just happen to be right next to each other so to speak....cortifoam would help it because it'll get to that sore spot too.

Wow Joanna that is somewhat great news, very limited inflammation :) I hope you feel better soon! I order 15% zinc oxide off amazon and it works way better than monkey butt paste and other stuff.
UC since '05 and DX with chronic Lyme's in '10. Lialda, lexapro, trying Uceris .5asa never put me in remission. I eat well, exercise , pray and use my faith, but sometimes you still need medication. I tried without it, bad idea.i'm not out trying to save the world, just trying to make a difference, with a smile and a positive attitude :) a fighter in life!

Zinc oxide is a barrier cream -- it's not meant to absorb, it just sits on top of the skin and protects it from getting irritated by feces so it can heal undisturbed.

Glad you're feeling better!
