My sister and brother in law, along with my other sister are 100% convinced gluten is evil........ to the extreme. They can all tolerate it without issue and have so all their lives until the fad really kicked in up here about a year or two ago and then they all of a sudden became "gluten intolerant".

I always tell them they have no idea what it's like to "have" to avoid certain food versus "having the choice". So a personal decision that I for one would freaking love to have.

I brought a pile of pastries to a family event that were chalk full of gluten. Both my sisters snacked on them all day long and late into the evening and were 100% perfectly fine. Eventually I told my one sister they were not gluten free and she freaked out and launched into this "I have such a headache now and feel sooooo bloated routine"... "you know I can't eat gluten she says"...... She "thought" they were gluten free initially as I am the one that brought them (along with a bunch of other food) for others and didn't mention anything about them, haha... At the mere mention of it she develops a spontaneous headache and bloating and goes home feeling sick.... My other sister left before I could mention it to her and never heard a peep out of her. She was more than fine the next day. Actually she even commented on Facebook how "good" she felt the next day from all the "healthy" food I supplied.

I'm such a bad brother.. nothing more fun than messing with your sisters minds :)

Amazing the tricks the mind plays on some.

In any case, people have the right to choose what they want to eat for whatever reason they want to believe, but the power of suggestion from marketing and websites these days is insane.....

I just look at how children and how they can eat reams of crap and still have boundless energy.

That's why I don't take food intolerances in adults seriously, unless they have a confirmed diagnosis of coeliac disease, food allergy (not intolerance), IBD, etc.

ahh you are an evil brother mark!!

my little sister has always eaten whatever she wants but we found out a few days ago that she is expecting a baby and now she's asking me to cook her healthy meals. i'm like, you've always said how "gross" and "weird" my food is and now you want me to be your personal chef?!?!?

she started her prenatal vitamins a few days ago and has been living in the bathroom- tons of diarrhea and vomiting. i looked at the ingredients and it is scary what doctors are prescribing for expectant mothers.

Mind rules. expect bad results, get bad results. expect wellness, wellness is there. Autoimmunity throws this all out of whack, but you can return to it in periods of remission

I gotta be honest... Your food is a little weird banana! I mean bacon fat balls, pigs ears, ummm.... you eat some funky stuff!!! I'd be hesitant on some of it lol. Just kidding - sorta! I guess I do to though when trying to get better or feel better. Anything to be somewhat normal again.

I have 5 sisters and they all ask me to cook for them when they are prego... it's become tradition or something. Lucky me. They also get all weird and crazy and call me about stuff that makes no sense. And cry a lot. So sounds like you have some fun days ahead of you!

Thought I'd mention my second youngest sister just had her baby a few months ago - she could not handle the prenatal vitamins either. Same reaction. So I just cooked and taught her to cook a lot of plain old SCD type real food only things for vitamins and minerals like home made broths and salads with fresh home made dressings and so on. She said she did quite well with it. From time to time random foods however would throw her into a puke frenzy. Which was fine by me cause it left me more food to eat :)

But you should help her... after all you're really helping your niece or nephew to get the best start they can when they first open their eyes here... new little people are awesomely exciting.

Hahaha this is awesome!!! And I totally agree that people should stop taking for granted the things they have a choice in. I have a friend with celiac disease and she is absolutely miserable. She would LOVE to eat a bagel for breakfast but doesn't have that luxury. My sister-in-law also just had a baby in December and it appears as though my niece has some food intolerances. We are REALLY hoping it's just a phase that she'll grow out of. So far she can't handle dairy, eggs, and soy. If my sister-in-law eats anything (she's breastfeeding) with the tiniest amount of either of those in it my niece is miserable. Super colicky and you can just tell she's in pain trying to pass gas and stool and nothing helps to subside it (gripe water, etc) except just avoiding those foods. Also had a bout of blood and mucus after my sister-in-law ate soy. She would absolutely die for a piece of pizza right now lol.

You know what I discovered tastes amazing that is gluten free;

Glutino english muffins to die for IMO with butter, it's so flaky and I love the taste and they're bigger than regular english muffins, also Udi's double chocolate muffins OMG YUMMY!!!! Also found in the freezer section just as the english muffins, absolutely my two favorites that I've tried so if anyone knows someone (or yourself) that is doing a gluten free diet I strongly recommend these 2 products. I pop the english muffin into the microwave for 28 seconds then to make it easier to break apart then into the toaster, and the Udi's chocolate muffin I microwave for 29 seconds and it's like a warm chocolate cake...they're so good!

You know what crazy is I keep meaning to post about Glutino White Sandwich Bread. I tried it about 4 months ago and my body loves it. Soooo nice to have a "real" tasting sandwich or peanut butter and toast in the morning.

BUT, it's the oddest thing..... Based on the bread I looked and noticed they made english muffins and I was like wow! This is awesome. I bought a package, came home, toasted one up and put butter like you suggest and bit into it and was just floored at how awesome it was... I used to love English Muffins. A few hours later though - wham... explosive D, cramping and even a touch of mucus.....

For me there must be something in these and other gluten free products that is a big trigger. My guess at the moment is it is a type of yeast. But I am not sure. I can eat glutino's crackers (the melba toast like ones) but their veggie crackers give me major gas and uncomfortableness. I keep meaning to take some time and put the ingredients of each on a spreadsheet and see if I can spot anything so I know for the future.

So frustrating.... But for any that have issue with gluten but love english muffins... I will attest to their awesomeness! Man I'd kill for one right now with some home made strawberry jam.

I think they make cinnamon raison bread as well, so I want to try that next and see how it goes.

UGH, that suck Canada Mark!! It's crazy how different our systems are....I don't even have a gluten issue and have been doing fine with the gluten free products that the dietitian put me for the low FODMAP diet but I enjoy the Glutino english muffins so much that I might just keep eating them, I either have a soft-boiled egg with it or turkey meat and it's awesome and the perfect size too, bigger than regular english muffins....it's crazy they have to stay in the freezer (same with the Udi's chocolate muffins) and that they don't exprie for like a year lol but I know it's because they apparently don't have a bunch of additives in them and that's why they have to be kept frozen.

omg mark. i always forget how many sisters you have. that is insane. you must be a pro uncle by now!! yeah, i plan to help my sister since the thought of her being a mother is terrifying haha i'm sure my mom and i will be the ones raising the kid since my sister is against abortion/adoption.

i found a better brand of prenatals called raw vitamin code that has great reviews so i ordered those. i packed her some tuna avocado salad for lunch today so i hope she eats that. she demolished a footlong hoagie at midnight (i am dead serious) and has been living off of pickles and ben & jerry's.

Apologies in advance for being a smartarse, but I googled Glutino English muffins and found an ingredients list almost straight away.

INGREDIENTS: WATER, CORN STARCH, TAPIOCA STARCH, SKIM MILK POWDER, CORN FLOUR, EGG WHITES, CANE SUGAR, CANOLA OIL AND/OR SUNFLOWER OIL AND/OR SAFFLOWER OIL, SALT, CELLULOSE GUM, YEAST, BAKING POWDER (SODIUM ACID PYROPHOSPHATE, SODIUM BICARBONATE, CORN STARCH, MONOCALCIUM PHOSPHATE, CALCIUM SULFATE, TRICALCIUM PHOSPHATE), GLUCONO-DELTA-LACTONE, PECTIN, SODIUM BICARBONATE, SODIUM ALGI- NATE, MODIFIED CELLULOSE, CORN MEAL, IRON, NIACIN, TRICALCIUM PHOSPHATE, PYRIDOXINE HYDROCHLORIDE, THIAMINE MONONITRATE, RIBOFLAVIN.

That's got more stuff in it than the cheapo factory-produced loaf I get from my local supermarket, let alone a better quality loaf. I did try a gluten-free diet a few years ago and was not impressed with the quality of the gluten-free products. You're paying 2-3x as much for inferior substitutes. If I had to go on a gluten-free diet again, I think I would just try to stick to foods that are already naturally gluten-free. Would be hard though; no more sandwiches, toast, naan bread, etc.

juststud said...

haha, it's a very witty trick. I've always thought that gluten free craze is more about "mental intolerance" than the real one. In Poland, for example, people who make a lot of money on selling gluten free stuff have launched a series of "educational" graphics presenting human organs squeezed and wrapped with some glue like disgusting substance. The text below says that it is what we are doing to our body every day by consuming bread. Although many medical articles denounce it as nonsense, people find it appealing. The posters however don't say that these "healthy" gluten free bread and other products they are selling consist entirely of chemicals and additives. On the other hand, i can believe that people who spend a lot of money and energy on sticking to that diet may actually "set their mind" to feel better and it brings results. And this is what your family hoax has proven :)
