Hi all!

So, it seems that I'm having a weird problem that could possibly be linked to my UC (which seems to be in remission). My UC has been totally fine for the last few weeks.

I was on the birth control pill since I was 18. I stopped in March in hopes to conceive...I'm now 33. Things were fine for awhile. Now, my periods seem to have stopped. Haven't had one in 47 days. I'm not prego according to multiple tests. Has anyone ever had this happen with UC? Has this disease screwed up my body so badly that somehow I'm now infertile/in menopause? I'm freaking out here.
Diagnosed with ulcerative proctitis in 2010 and changed to UC in 2014.
Many flares along the way, one hospitalization
Past: prednisone, canasa, anusol, cortifoam, budesonide suppositories
Present: 4 lialda a day, canasa (still flaring/Entyvio next)

Had a similar problem while flaring and applying Cortenema which is a Hydro-Cortison based rectal enema.

I was on the pill and despite this did not have a real period (just very faint signs of a stain for a day, not more than that) - after I stopped the Cortenema my period came back to normal.

Be patient and good luck!

I'm 33 as well and had the same problem a year ago when I got off of birth control. I had been on the pill for 15 years (with the exception of 2 pregnancies) including after my UC Dx, with no missed periods. I was in a long term flare at the time I stopped the pill and was pretty anemic (I've battled anemia on and off all of my life). My GYN prescribed a course of progesterone to "reset" my system and I finally had a light and short cycle about 3 weeks after. My cycles remain light and short, but I notice they are further apart and lighter when I am bleeding from a flare. As soon as I up my iron supplementation, they become more "normal". My GI joked that I just don't have enough blood to give up from both ends, so my cycle gets short-changed. But I really think he's onto something. Maybe have your doc check your hemoglobin levels. You could be a little anemic and getting "short-changed" because of it.

Mine is like clockwork. Were you on a pill without a period? I hadn't had a period in years due to a mini-pill that you take every day. I stopped it and my period came back right away. I am sure yours will be back. 33 is young. Go to the OBGYN and get checked out. Maybe it's something hormonal but I am sure it will be back. I wish mine would go away and not return. I think bananagirl has issues with missed periods. do you have low body weight?

Mine stops when I'm on prednisone. If you have been on steroids recently that could have interfered with it.
-2005 dx proctitis, 2006 dx pancolitis, pathology reports on occasion have suggested crohn's colitis, 2007 10 day hospitalization due to UC

-Past Meds during flares: Lialda, Asacol, Prednisone, 6-MP, Cortifoam, Levaquin, Omeprazole, Bentyl, Cipro, methylprednisolone, protonix

Yep...when I first flared, I was peri menopausal, and my period immediately stopped. I mentioned this to the DR, and he said my body had enough to deal with, so it stopped. I got one period about 4 months after that flare resolved, and that was it! Had a hysterectomy four months ago, so definitely done now! :)

I was on Ortho Tri Cyclen so I still got a monthly period on the pill. Maybe my body is all screwed up now without it. Plus, I was on those Budesonide suppositories for a few months. I do probably have what would be considered low body weight. I'm 5'8 and weigh about 115 pounds.

Might not be UC related. My periods were all over the place when I came off the pill.

It's possible for you to not have a normal cycle when flaring. If you are sexually active, then make sure to take a pregnancy test, just to rule that out. Lialda does not stop periods.

I’ve got the opposit issue: I have PCOS and an IUD. I *only* get a period when flaring 😂

Moral of the story: inflammation can totally screw up your body. Stress of any kind can alter your cycle as your increased stress = inhospitable time for pregnancy. More for some people than for others.

I have PCOS and have been on the pill since I was 16 as a result. I probably would never get a period without the pill, but with it, I get symptoms every month, but only bleed every few months. *shrug* When our bodies are stressed, it can cause us to miss periods, so I can see period loss being related to a bad flare. Lialda shouldn't mess with one's period, though.

Celeriac, have you seen some of the more recent theories about how PCOS may be autoimmune? It is apparently associated with higher rates of certain AI disorders.
