Has anyone taken those tests (I think from 23andme) where they test your stool and give you a report of the bacteria found and how it compares and contrasts to one who has a healthy GI track? If so, how was your experience with the test?

23andMe does generic tests from spit.

I believe you mean uBiome.

Did both. Even though no history of IBD in my family (that I know of) the genetics said I was more likely to have UC and when comparing my DNA with GWAS, I have like 30 genes (I forget the total but it was a LOT) known to be associated with IBD and there are over 100 known...Go figure. It also said I had two genes associated with glaucoma, and- yes, I was dx with glaucoma age 40- which is young, and I am not diabetic or African-American or in any high risk group, and again no history of that in my family either. I tried to recruit family members for testing but none would have it, though I did get an email from 23andme one day that said I had a "new relative" who shared 25% of my genome. Wow! That was my aunt who I had never met before and that was cool! She doesn't have UC or glaucoma, but was slightly more likely than avg population to get IBD.

My gut biome in a flare was wonky as is "typical" of folks with IBD; 5x number of Proteobacteria compared to normal non-IBD folks. Go figure. uBiome and also American Gut project are doing studies of IBD patients and you can get tested for free to be part of the study.

I sure wish I had my ubiome test form before I got UC. It is skewed now, but if I knew what it was like, I could select probiotics to get back there.
11/08: ischemic colitis and scope perf colon. 12cm colon/ileocecal resected. IV antib:sepsis.
01/10: Dx: Mod. UC pancolitis. Rx: Lialda 3x.
02/11: Major flare w/antib:sinus. Rx: 40mg Pred taper. 6mp.
07/11: Histol remiss rt/trans; worse sigmoid. Rx: Rowasa & hydrocort
---
Curr: 1-2 soft-formed stool, no urgency: Lialda 2x, NO PRED, probiotics, Vit-D/C

exactly...you can order a kit now to get ready! Or get a special two-for so you can do before/after any kind of treatment. I think it's one of the best tools for IBD/IBS peeps out there and cant wait until this is approved and covered by insurance like any other test.

Beginning of flare =5x proteobacteria
Nicotine patches: went from 15.5% proteobacteria to 0.11% Yup those are the numbers.
That's pretty significant. Feel great, normal poop, had totally clean colonoscopy, RBC and hematocrit going up first time in 19 freaking years.
NOte: Nicotine will NOT work for everyone, I am convinced that as a 2nd hand smoker, I was really ......a smoker who quit when I left home. I had terrible reactions to cigarette smoke as a chile, constantly runny nose, sore throat etc and doctor advised smoker to quite ... but hey! nicotine is addictive (I personally don't crave it when I forget to use a patch)
thanks, mommie dearest for allowing me to be a child smoker and UC sufferer.
UC, 19 years, dx age 33
Asacol 19+ years, HD Asacol
and 50 mg Imuran
Nicotine patches put me in remission
"maintenance" nicotine 10.5 mg patch every other day
never a smoker, heavy 2nd hand smoke as child/teen

I did the genetic DNA test last year. It's easy (spit test) and free if you ever had IBD. I think they are trying to get 10,000 participants and are a couple thousand short. Mary
I have had this disease for 15 years now. Tolerable at first as I went into remission with drugs like prednisone and finaly Remicade. A few years ago, all of these drugs stopped working for me and my UC became much worse. I am currently on Chinese herbs and doing great. Good bye prescription drugs! Daily regiment of supplements:

So the ubiome test...can one find out information on what probiotic strains are missing from their GI track compared to a healthy person by taking it?

There may be a way to figure out what probiotic would be beneficial, but I am not sure how to do that. Most of the info will show you what types are in there, and then how you compare to the sample population. There are ways to download the raw data and interpret that - so I'm sure there is a way to do it if you have that knowledge. I definitely don't!

I will say that people on this board that were more scientifically inclined than I am gave some good tips - some that had really high firmicute populations did the homework to figure out that taking Grape Seed Extract was helpful in balancing that out. I added GSE to my regimen and found it helpful! I did my sample when I was coming out of a flare - now that I am in remission I'm thinking about doing it again for comparison. It's neat stuff.
F, 39 DX Severe Pancolitis in 1/2013
Flared 11/14-12/14, 4/15-7/15
Diet - Tried every one in the book! Gluten free and whole foods, limited dairy and FODMAPs
Meds - Prednisone during flare, Apriso and Canasa for maintenance
Supplements - Isatis Cooling and Grape Seed Extract (these two were my game changers), VSL#3, Turmeric

A uBiome test compares your gut flora makeup to the average. They tell you which common "families of bacteria" you're high or low in.

Let's look at humans, we're in the "family" of Hominidae as are all other monkeys and apes within scientific classifications. So knowing the family of bacteria isn't very specific. I think it's very hard to look at a uBiome report and know what probiotic strain to take. As a strain of probiotic is a very specific thing, and that report isn't that precise.

The report has good information but it's not easy for a layman, like you or I, to know how to take action.

I think one issue with these tests is that you need to stop taking all probiotics for weeks before you take the tests, or else the results are confounded by the probioitics you take; you just measure what you are consuming. I am reluctant to stop taking probiotics long enough to take the test.

Would someone mind posting a sample of what can be found in the report? Also, what does grape seed extract do? It has probiotics?
