Sorry to hear that you're struggling with your medication costs. It's expensive and many of us pay a lot out of pocket just to stay healthy. Totally unfair.
Ask your gastroenterologist and pharmacist about
ion for sulfasalazine, it's a generic equivalent to lialda, apriso, asacol. My doctor says it costs less than $100 a month even without insurance. Sulfasalazine contains a complex molecule that your gut bacteria break down into mesalamine and a bi-product. The bi-product is sulfa, which some have allergies to. It's an older uc medication that is also used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, so it helps with joint pains (a common complaint of uc patients).
Another similar generic equivalent is balsalazide disodium (brandname colazal). I've heard it's more expensive than sulfasalazine, but without the sulfa component (good if you have a known sulfa allergy).
