Hey everyone... sorry to have to be back on here... after probably a year of remission, started flaring a couple of weeks ago - Nausea/queasyness, cramps, and some blood... (Not a tremendous amount, and not really diarhea, so I know I don't have a lot to complain about/much to be grateful when I read how some of you are really suffering)

Anyway - my question is about canasa. I started using the suppositories again because of this flare. Not to get too gross, but didn't feel my bowel was clear all the time, so I got some fleet enemas and used that the other night and then again tonight. Has anyone else done this? Just curious since it wasn't suggested anywhere. Just seems to make sense to make sure the medicine has a best chance to be absorbed where it needs to.

Appreciate any feedback... Heres to everyone's healing
Diagnosed with UC in Feb 2010; Had one flare up in Summer of 2012 - in the midst of a moderate flare up since the end of Dec/beg of Jan (bad stomach cramps have subsided, but rectal bleeding every day) Lialda increased to 4 capsules a day and on 2/1/15 had Canasa (1 suppository a day) added.

- Also have substantial allergies and asthma (which for the most part is under control)

I've though before about clearing myself out with a water enema before using canasa or rowasa. Usually after a lot of frustration of wasting an expensive medication because I wasn't at all empty beforehand, as I thought I was. Never done it though.

All of those enema bottles do have caps you can screw off and fill with tap water and reuse. I've reused fleet bottles, as I don't want to apply salt water on a wound when I'm flaring and have a scope to prep for.

Have you seen that movie The Perfect Storm? That's my bowels and why I need bathroom access absolutely right now, capiche?

Sounds like a great idea.

I've wasted lots of $$$ on meds thinking I was cleaned out when I really wasn't.

For a second I was thinking tap water was no good, but then I thought to myself I drink tap water so what does it matter.

Not a good idea....period. you should be on retention enemas anyway...the supps aren't enough for treating a flare, my opinion.

*Heather* I give suggestions, do with them what you will.
Status: ...Asacol 3 @ 2x daily; Salofalk enema @ 3rd night (nightly/ flares, tapered/maintenance)
~diagnosed January 1989 UC (proctosigmoiditis)
~Bentylol 20mg as needed; Zantac 150mg; Pulmicort/Airomir (asthma);Effexor XR 37.5 (depression)
~vitamins/minerals/supplements; Probiotics....(RenewLife Ultimate Flora Critical Care+Primadophilus Reuteri capsules @ bedtime)
~Metamucil capsules 7 @ 2x daily with meals; Vitamin D 4500 IU
~URSO 500mg @ 2x daily for Primary Biliary Cholangitis
My doc's logic.. "TREAT (FROM)BOTH ENDS" worth it !!!

thanks for the feedback everyone. I had already done it last night when I thought to get your experiences. To be honest, it seems like it was helpful. BM this morning seemed more normal and I didn't see the remnants of the Canasa like I often did... Added bonus - no blood today. I know that doesn't mean the flare is completely clear and I know doing the enema's on a daily basis isn't a good idea. But perhaps to help at least get the thing sort of under control?
