First flare in 8 years. Ugh...Now asacol, with insurance is $1000/mo. Any new alternatives? Can not get into to see my gastro doc until August. My GP is treating me until then. Finished my round of Prednisone and trying to help my GP find that new alternative that would help me until that August appointment.

Thank you in advance.

Several of the mesalamines have co-pay assistance cards. Also, form ins plan to is plan they prefer different ones.

Does you ins have a web page for pricing drugs?

Your health insurance should have a list of formulary (that is preferred) and non-formulary (not preferred) medications. That's always the first list to check.

Brand UC medications (many have patient copay assistance cards which are highly recommended)
  • Lialda
  • Apriso
  • Delzicol
  • Pentasa
Generics
  • Mesalame Delayed Release
  • Balsalazide disodium
  • Sulfasalazine

I would suggest you get a list of 5ASA meds they do cover.

what have you been doing for the last 8 years to treat/manage/survive your UC ?

ya, i tend to agree with wyom in taking a conservative approach and try to see if anything recent stands out as a potential flare inviter -

I take Apriso. It is a tier 3 drug under my insurance (i.e. I have to take and fail a Tier 1 and Tier 2 drug before they will cover it). Since my insurance technically denied coverage on it, I was able to use the Apriso discount card from the Apriso website. The first month is free and then it is $10/mo. after that.

Really doubt it's the food if you were in remission the 8 years. Unmedicated?

I suggest rectal meds in the mix.

Got my asacol from canada it was 235 for three months out of pocket no insurance. Had my Dr. send in prescription to a pharmacy that does this. I was taking another drug that was not working at all.

Check out Balsalazide. It was pretty reasonable for us.
