Hello,

I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and the past year I was in remission for maximum 2 weeks, every 4 months basically. My bowel movements have increased and bleeding per rectum daily. I'm on asacol (mesalazine )1600 mg 2 times a day and imuran 100 mg daily. I'm supposed to be using the asacol enemas but they're so uncomfortable that i skip it all together.

I'm worried why the medications aren't working and the bleeding diarhea still won't stop. Is it even normal to bleed for so long and only stop for few days every few months? sad

My doctor also wants to do an MRE. Has anyone tried it? (if yes please tell me how it went and how painful is it)

Is it normal to bleed for months? No. Can it happen with UC? Absolutely. You're certainly undertreated and that's what's causing your symptoms. Have biologics been discussed (remicade, humira, etc)?

I swore to myself that once i was off of prednisone that I'd burn both the pills and bottle with great hedonistic enjoyment: booze, food, and dance. And if I ever need a colectomy... ;-)

the asacol does not appear t be a strong enough med for you.

keep a watch on anemia

How much blood are you losing per day, can you tell? I was passing blood and mucus alone once my UC got bad, before diagnosis. I probably bled overall for close to a year, but it was a decent amount of bleeding (1-2 tbs per day) for probably 4-5 months. Do keep a close eye on anemia, as DB said. And you may need something stronger to treat with. Perhaps a biologic like Remicade?
