So I'm currently going through a bit of a severe flare up. My Colitis isn't being controlled by anything and even the prednisolone isn't really working to keep symptoms at bay.

My question is regarding the symptoms I've been experiencing. I seem to get severe lower abdominal pain in the mornings especially which are usually accompanied by bowel movement (bloody). However the pain is so severe that I also get very nauseous whilst sitting on the loo and trying to pass the stool to get over the overwhelming pain. Is this a normal flare up symptom or should I be concerned about things like mega colon? It has been going on for a number of days now.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds pretty typical of a flare. When I would flare, the pain could be excruciating that I would boarder on passing out.

Oh yeah....passing a teeny stool that feels like a watermelon? Yep, normal flare for me....I call them white-knucklers.

How many times a day are you going? And what is the stool like?

What meds are you on aside for pred, and how long on the pred?

Nausea and pain are common when you have severe inflammation. Not that a painful bm isn't enough as it is, worse yet if you have to throw up as well... Some of us have been there and can empathize. Pains can also be caused from pancreatitis, muscle spasms within the colon, and other issues as well. I know I got sharp knife-stabbing-like pains during he worst of my flares, and it doubled me over in pain. Words cannot describe how much it sucks.

If steroids aren't working then a pathogen like c diff is certainly possible. Did you have a stool test in order to rule out possible infectious causes to your worsened symptoms?

What steroid are you taking and at what dose? 40mgs of oral prednisone is common, but higher doses cn be prescribed (I've heard up to 60mgs).

How long have you been flaring? Have you been in regular contact with your gasteroenteroligist about your progress or lack thereof?

Thanks guys. So I'm currently going around 10-20 times a day. Everyday seems to be soo different from the next. Stool every time is mainly mucous and blood during the day. Only semi solid stool I get is in the mornings.

Only medication I'm on right now is prednisone and Pentasa. Had to come off the Humira as it wasn't touching my symptoms. On a tapering dose.

In terms of c.diff I had the test for that around 2 weeks ago when I had to go to accident and emergency due to the pain. This was when I was put back on steroids. They've done all sorts of tests since then including a colonoscopy last week where the colon still showed pretty bad inflammation. After discussing with my gastro we have decided to go for surgery now as there are no other options left for me to try. Also due to my current circumstances of having to travel a lot for work and the fact that I start my final year of uni in September the doctors have suggested now be a good time for surgery. To be perfectly honest I'm dreading it but am kind of glad that it's finally being taken out. I know that an ileostomy is going to be hard to get used to but after days like today where I couldn't leave the house for a good 2 hours this morning I need to put an end to it. I'm really at the limit of what this diesease can throw at you to be perfectly honest. Just want my life back!

I'm sorry OP. I'm in the hospital right now because of that pain that just makes you heave...I was ready to beat my head in to make it stop.

Started feeling a bit better yesterday evening then the wee dark hours of the morning back to square one.

I get where you are coming from regarding surgery. It's scary and I worry but a big part of me would be relieved if that cut sucker out!!!!!!

Sorry to hear of your pain. I know too well how excruciating it is. I haven't been able to move much from the sofa this morning because of the pain.

Yeah me too I'm worried as it's going to be such a big change but in exchange I'll be getting control of my life back and actually being able to leave the house in a relaxed state will no doubt be a welcomed thing for me after nearly 3 years of constant suffering.
