I was looking for this exact information a few months ago.
This study seems to point to overdoing aerobic exercise being a negative. However, the amount they discussed was way higher than average folks would be doing anyway.....but it did cause me to re-examine my desire to run an ultra-marathon in the future.
From the article:
"Several studies have shown an association between low to moderate exercise and an improvement in the immune system, while intensive or prolonged bouts are detrimental."
I guess too much stress is too much stress?
That said, I think the recommendation of 20-60 minutes a day is what I am personally going to limit myself to and I think for now it's a perfect compromise. I am not sure I'll ever return to triathlons or anything farther than a half marathon until I can get some more clear cut verification......it's just not worth the risk.
My first episode of UC (back in 2008) was right around when I ramped up my exercise levels. However, I was in remission for 8 years after treatment and was exercising super hard that whole time. I wish we had more definitive studies to go on.....if anyone has any, please do post !
