I get really bad breath when I flare and I cant detect it myself. Makes it hard to keep a job. Anyone else have the same issue and is there something to take for it? I try Starbucks mints, but they seem to cause UC flare also. Gum rots my teeth.
Sulfasalazine
Occasional prednisone
Losing muscle mass while in flare
Tecta for swallowing issues.

Rots your teeth? See your dentist and your GI. Explain what you are experiencing.
Get checked for h. Pylori.
Have sinuses checked.

What is your dental hygeine like?

Chewing gum to cure the breath, rots my teeth. Can't remember the name of the gum (memory is gone) but my dental hygiene is good.

But, yes will check for h. Pylori.
Not sure how to check my sinuses.

My routine is that I brush and floss, and then rinse with 2% peroxide. I buy 33% at Whole Foods and dilute it 1 part peroxide to 11 parts pure water (not tap) to make 3%, then I might cut that in half. peroxide kills all of the odor causing bacteria, makes teeth white, and they remineralize faster. It's the only thing that stopped gingivitis, for me. You have to make your own from food grade peroxide because the stuff in pharmacies has phosphoric acid added as a stabilizer, which will corrode your teeth.

If that doesn't help your breath then quincy's right, it's your stomach or your sinuses. You'll know your sinuses are involved because you'll have thick, gross smelling mucus when you blow your nose. If you can't smell your own bad breath then that suggests the problem might be in your nose.

An h. pylori breath test can easily tell if you have it. They give off gnarly gas that makes breath stink.

may want to drink more water. You may be a bit dehydrated. When you brush your teeth, brush your tongue also....as silly as it sounds. LOL

Oh! about changing toothbrushes... another good point is to wash your toothbrush, with soap. I do this every night before I brush my teeth. Just use a bit of plain hand soap (not scented and no added moisturizer), or a plain bar.

A dentist once told me that every time a toilet is flushed there's spray that goes into the air containing bacteria. Plus bathrooms are damp. So bacteria linger everywhere, including toothbrushes which are full of food particles from each time we brush. If you don't wash them then you are inserting bacteria into your mouth every time you clean them.

It's possible that your liver isn't good. Have you had a blood test done? I would look into liver detox.
UC since 2002
Was on Remicade and successfully made the step back to Azathioprine
Currently on 150 mg Azathioprine, Wellbutrin 150 mg, Zoloft 50 mg, CCherbal (as needed), Algaecal

This is actually really common for people with digestive illnesses. The reason is that our gut bacteria produce substances that we then absorb and exhale in our breath. Obviously if our system is out of whack then the substances we produce are not good ones. I always keep mints on hand for when I’m flaring andensure myoeal hygiene is up to scratch (although this is not the culprit in our case). Unfortunately there’s not a lot you can do, I find probiotics help though.

There's been a number of posts over the years about UCers having more dental issues than everyone else (dental issues of all sorts from more cavities, bridges, crowns, thrush, candida, bad breath, etc.). We know the bacterium makeup is all messed up within our large intestine, and well, our mouth is the other end of that very same tube and it stands to reason that the makeup is out of sorts there as well. We can get thrush and candida in our mouths from fungal over-growths (especially when on ioral steroids or using an asthma-inhaler).

What does your dentist say? Have they done a deep-cleaning to make sure there's no plaque under your gums? What's your daily brushing routine like (twice a day at least)? Do you floss and use mouth rinse daily?
