I have switched to psyllium capsules from Metamucil because I am trying to avoid sugar and sweeteners. The caps are pretty small, so you have to take a lot of them (like 12 a day), but at least you can't taste it.
You might have to experiment a little as to when is the best time to take it. Just try taking a few with dinner and see how it affects BM's. Then you can add a few more at lunch or whatever. It will bulk up your stools and may trigger an extra trip to the bathroom, which may or may not be a problem for you. I take 4 caps, 3 times a day (at mealtime) and I can still go all day without a BM after going early in the morning a few times.
I've also started eating steel cut oats for breakfast. It bulks up your stool, but unlike regular oats, I can tolerate the fiber content.
