I just had an iron infusion today and I feel so nauseas and my stomach hurts so much. I don’t know what’s going on & what can cause this. Also having bad diarrhea.the reason I’m getting these infusions is so I can tolerate iron better than the pills. & I’ve had this same infusion before at the hospital a few months ago with no issues. Any reason for this? I’m in a flare so it could be unrelated but I’ve never felt nauseous like this

Iron is hard on the gut. Are you anemic? Is that why you are getting iron infusions!

Although Iron IV infusions are generally easier on the system then iron tablets are, there's no guarantee there won't be a temporary, adverse reaction to it. How are you feeling today?

Jay99, What kind of Iron IV did you get?

Feraheme is sort of latest generation and is great.

I get GI symptoms every time I get an iron IV, including increased UC symptoms. Plus I get really tired and achy. If I'm already flaring, the flare gets slightly worse... more bleeding etc no matter how I try to change diet. This makes me wonder if my UC is actually an infection because apparently bad organisms feed on iron. Plus it's just hard on the body to be given so much iron at once, it surely impacts the immune system and other things.

My doctor said it takes 7-10 days for iron IVs to start becoming new blood so I think (?) before that time it's just floating around in your blood causing side effects.

I am 72 year old female and for some reason my body has stopped storing Ferritin. I just finished with my second round Infusions. I had my first ones about 16 months ago. The first ones did not make me ill. I get 2 bags one week apart. This time, My stomach started feeling really bad a week before the infusion and it has continued now for 6 weeks of Nausea and gastritis. They told me Medicare will not pay for it until it gets so low and I think I may start paying out of pocket and get just one bag at a time to see if I can stop this. I have not seen my Hematologist since the infusion but an scheduled to go in April. I have been so ill , I have cried with this. I must have the Iron to live, but this has been miserable. I am in Scottsdale Az.
