-you understand brain and body chemistry better
-you overall are probably forced to eat wiser/healthier
-the steps taken to help colitis have benefits outside of colitis
-you learn many new things
-possibly there will be some type of spiritual reward for contributing a lot of hemoglobin to the creatures of the oceans and seas

Nothing positive.....but it seems people have to balance and glorify it....a behaviour that is interesting. It is what it is. People make choices based in their hardwiring....not a disease.

Not all learn.....but it's helpful to do so for enquiring minds.

I haven't changed my diet.....and my meds cost a hell of a lot of money for all the other crap I deal with.

The last one gave me a chuckle...
My 2cents.

Positive in a sense it potentially;

Promotes good diet 😃
Educates people on chronic illness and promotes respect towards anyone suffering.
Bloods done often catching many other illnesses early.

Good post, and there is Positivity or Negativity within ANYTHING, I tend to be positive.

In the UK we have the NHS as well so all meds and appointments are free.

Hopefully other nations one day have the same.

Sometimes I think some positives came out of it. I am more compassionate, but i feel like I could have gotten that from elsewhere, like having a child, or being raised by decent human beings.

I guess overall, nope, it's a curse. No sickness is beneficial, and if i could, I would definitely pass on ever having another diagnosis.

I always ate relatively healthy, even before UC.

I also think, perhaps we believe we understand our bodies, brains, and chemistry better than the general public, but we don't. We are just facing a crap situation and trying to make it into a superpower to make ourselves feel better about how crappy it is.

UC most likely saved my life. If I never had been diagnosed with UC, I never would have had the CT scan that found my kidney cancer. My urologist told me I was lucky because they found it early. Once you have symptoms of kidney cancer, it has usually spread and there isn’t much they can do for you. As much as UC is the worst, it was a blessing in disguise for me.

Since I have no choice but to deal with it, I can find positives. I would trade all of those positives today if it meant never having developed the disease.

The positives:
- major advancement of my understanding of human health and my body
- more awareness of food
- respect for my healthy boundaries and limits
- a lot of networking with people I never would've met
- an ability to help others that even a lot of doctors don't have
- a change in my lifestyle that has giving me a unique perspective

If you can find positives in UC you're either still in denial or you can afford all that crap we have to put up with.

And i was eating healthy food before getting UC.

I'd try and stay positive if you can, and maybe running through the pluses of UC help toward that end. However, UC is, in my mind, a lot of crap (physical, emotional collateral to depression/anxiety etc.), and I cannot really put a shine on that turd even with a good wax.

Has UC made me a better person?, lol probably not. I was a pretty good person before UC who ate healthy, exercised a lot, etc. I am a stubborn Taurus the bull, ornery and stubborn to a fault, so not much changes me smile

I'm with wendi...

-I am helping lower the unemployment rate by keeping at least one vampire (phlebotomist) employed.
-I have perfected my toilet cleaning skills.
-I have the coolest collection this side of the country (of unused drugs, that is).
-I am more in tune with my bathroom habits than I have ever been before.
-Bodily functions are no longer TMI, and it is fun to squick my mom out.
-I have an excuse to work from home on those days I am too lazy to get out of bed and go to the office.

Learned to be skeptical about the healing wisdom from the medical establishment and that Big Pharma can be motivated by greed. Learned to more than ever question authority.

I can see only one incredibly positive impact which it has Not on you, but on your adversaries. When they learn about your misfortune, they will start flourishing and have all possible successes in life. And believe me, I know something about it smile

Lots of negativity in this thread.

UC has definitely given me perspective. It's helped to show me what is really, truly important in life and that nothing really matters if we don't have our health. Of course, I don't always apply this to my life, because I still get upset over things that don't really matter in the long-run, but I like to think I have a greater appreciation for my health and don't take the good days for granted quite as much anymore.

Often these "something positive about UC" threads get locked as they get so negative and combative (many of those locked over the years) lol. So, kudos to us all for keeping this one around and still going. Cheers!

If you can pull something positive out of UC, and feel better about it then that's great, more power to you and all. I'm generally a hopeless-optimist, but this whole UC thing has worn me down over the decade or so that I've had it, and I just can't stay positive about it, myself (those rose-colored glasses are shattered to powder <_<). I'm more a realist and pragmatist about it all now.

You might have UC if your dream home renovation project is to add one of those techie Japanese toilets with voice activated seat warmer, bidet, deodorizer, and soothing music...

The problem is, that if you are newly diagnosed with a mild case seeking information then people here rightly/wrongly come across very negative.

When in truth it is a minority who struggle with the illness, the rest live full, rewarding life's, all be it with more doctor visits.

It has been positive for my son in a sense that it has improved his diet, maturity and awareness of hospitals and illness.

He has never missed school, or suffered any pain, touch wood however, reading on here would sometimes, again rightly or wrongly give the impression that he is headed towards a life of misery and pain.

Most chronic illness manifest different in types and severity whether it be Asthma or UC or anything else. Everyone's journey is different and I think perhaps as a struggling newby, that isn't necessarily portrayed on here. Still a great place for advice and information however, I wouldn't read to much into the negativity.

Good post nakamura967 - very good post. I only come on here when I bleed - that could be from Colitis or Hemmorhoids but I seek refuge here and this place has taught me more about IBD and other bowel diseases than any doctor or website. Thank you.

With some pretty severe cases it does make you realize how lucky you are if you disease is mild.
Mild Chrohns Colitis since 2007
VSL#3, 4.5g Pentasa, Vitamin D, rectal cream for Hemmies.

Current Symptoms - Normal BM's 2 times a day. Occasional blood maybe every 2 days. Rectal pain after BM. Hugely anxious, Haemorrhoids.

I feel lucky as well my son is the same. I learned knowledge is power, and that can be in the form of experience or indeed medical knowledge from doctors.
Your symptoms londonred look like my sons, all he ever has is small blood but it can be a pain to get totally stopped. Now suspecting piles, how long can hemoroids (piles) last? Have you ever required steroids?

Hemmorhoids can last a long time. We have Colitis which causes us stool issues and the straining or diarrhea can cause Hemmies.

Currently my only symptom is the blood and it’s so frustrating.
