I am sure i am coming down with an ear infection. Have an earache that wont completely go away after 2 days. My question is what do we do when we dont want to use antibiotics cause I am sure antibiotic abuse is what caused my UC. Is there an alternative?

Colloidal Silver. 2 drops in the ear at bedtime. My grandson is highly prone to ear infections and this works for him every time.

At times we MUST take antibiotics, and they aren't guaranteed to cause flares. Certainly only use antibiotics when necessary with an UC (not for a cold lol).

If I have to take them, I always take probiotics.

So far, my UC has never flared up due to antibiotics. I did get c diff though, but that is because I had to take antibiotics for months and then was hospitalized.

I think azithromycin is pretty safe for UC from what Ive heard my doctors say. And that's probably what they'd give you for an ear infection, not something as hardcore as Flagyl, like someone said above.

The 4 antibiotics I've used in the past since UC are Zithromax, amoxicillin, Clavulin and Septra....no problems. I don't remember when I started using probiotics with antibiotics with my pharmacist's advice....sometime in the latter '90s.

Impala...i would think you're safe with the amount you're taking....just remember to adjust the timing with a 2 hour window either before or after the antibiotics since VSL isn't enteric coated.

Keep us updated how you're doing.

Also, my GI and I just discussed this, as I'm about to have dental work done and may need an antibiotic if there's any sign of infection. My GI said specifically to avoid clindamycin, for what it's worth.

Well my ear infection seems to be gone. I used colloidal silver for 2 days. Actually still using it to make sure its gone. Pain and fever like symptoms have subsided. I know some are gonna say then it wasnt an ear infection, well what ever it was regular earache drops or rememdies were not working and i had the earache for 2 or more days. So whatever it was, it wasnt gonna go away on its own. Just glad to be pain free.

Flagyl is most certainly an extremely hardcore and strong antibiotic. Have you ever taken it? I know it's safe for UC, never said it wasn't. But it's not likely to be prescribed for something like an ear infection. It's one of the only antibiotics that can kill c diff infections. It has horrible side effects. It's very hardcore.

Years ago I took a course of clindamycin for a infection in an ingrown toenail. A few weeks later my UC symptoms worsened dramatically. I have not been the same since; I never returned to a condition in which the same medications controlled my UC as they did previously.

It could be coincidental, but I suspect that antibiotic permanently altered my gut bacteria.

Casey LB that is the exact reason i never want to be on antibiotics again if i can avoid them. Antibiotics are what caused my UC. I had a history of strep and rather than going to the dr and getting on anitbiotics as they normally put you on i took some of my wifes left over amoxiclillian. They were 500mg and cut them in half. Took 250mg twice a day for 4 days. Then went to eat at an all you can eat shrimp restaurant and havent been the same since. That happened over a year and a half ago. Darn antibiotics ruined my gut bacteria and like you said i have nwver been the same since. I mean right after the 4 days of antibiotics the diarrhea started and all the other symptoms followed.

Sara - I don't know if we are talking about the same antibiotic, I'm talking about metronidazole which I've always thought to be flagyl equivalent. All antibiotics are generally dangerous to our health, but Metronidazole is neither hard core nor as dangerous as other common antibiotics. It is widely used in stomatology and dermathology. Some years ago it was the only antibiotic in Poland which you could get without a prescription which means that it wasn't considered that dangerous (and the pharmacist regulations in Poland are probably the strictest in Europe). I've taken metronidazole many times throughout my whole life (ear and throat infection) and I've never had any side effects. Besides it targets bacteria whch are thought to be possible uc culprits.
