I have been in a flare for almost a year with the primary symptom being blood in stools. Just switched to Humira and still having some bleeding though less than before. I have been on prednisone since May (now down to 5mg) and have blamed the pred for the increased blood glucose readings. I'm also anemic with low hemoglobin that is slowly improving since my blood transfusion last month.
PCP just ran a lot of blood tests and glucose is 159 and A1C is 7.2 -- both indicating diabetes
I have an appt with him next week and I'm sure he'll want to discuss. Hemoglobin is 10.1 (normal 11.5-15.5) (this was down to 7 when I had the transfusion).
Because of the bleeding I haven't been eating vegetables and have been eating low residue carbs like bread and mashed potatoes along with meats, yogurt, beets, and iron fortified cereals. I'd like to start eating vegetables again but unsure what won't irritate my colon since I am still seeing blood. I had been eating well cooked spinach but since I would see that in my BMs I stopped.
I am hoping that once I am off pred and the anemia and blood loss is resolved that the glucose and A1C return to normal.
What vegetables and other low carb foods do you eat when you are seeing blood?
