Just a quick background; I was diagnosed with left-sided colitis about 3 years ago, and have been more or less in a continuous flare ever since. I was moved from oral 5-asa's to 5-asa + 6mp, then taken off of both to start on Humira. In between all of this I've had multiple tapers on oral pred, my last one ending just over a month ago.
I had a scope about the same time, and got results back that my inflammation has reduced to being just in the rectum now. My GI doc did not want to continue me on oral steroids since it's localized, and instead started me on 100mg hydrocortisone enemas nightly. I've been on that for about 2.5 weeks now and have not had any big improvements.. basically they work for the first part of my day after waking up, I'll have a normal BM without bleeding.. but by night-time it comes back worse.. with blood, tenesmus, mucus.. and an inability to pass gas without soiling myself with blood. I told my GI about it obviously and he now wants me to do them twice a day instead of just nightly.. I've been doing that the past few days and it has unfortunately barely made a difference.
So, I have a couple questions for people who have had this sort of stubborn proctitis.. has anyone found that the enemas can take a really long time to start helping consistently? Secondly.. has anyone found that oral 5-asa's helped with their proctitis? I'm thinking about asking to take them again along with the humira if they have a chance of helping..
