Question which of these is the most inflammatory? Still been having a few symptoms I always get mucus before a flare, then I have to go on prednisone. Currently using no medication. Cbd oil got me in remission about 6-7 weeks ago from my last flare

1- caffeine (guilty here)
2- carb powders - waxymaize or Karbolyn
3- artificial sweeteners- I do use quite a bit to be honest flavored crystal light Powerade zero

I vote for secret choice "4 - none of the above are inflammatory at all" as some of us tolerate those without issues at all. I would urge you to get back on UC medications, like the mild anti-inflammatory mesalamines.

I agree with iPoop - #4, none of the above. Chocolate is repeatedly said to be inflammatory yet I can eat a lot of dark chocolate with no problem, same goes for a lot of other things that are considered inflammatory or hard to digest, i.e. beans, unbleached wheat flour, sugar, potatoes, ketchup, etc. It's certainly possible they'll have a tendency to be inflammatory but nothing is always/never inflammatory for everyone. Think like allergies; there's nothing that everyone is allergic to, but there are common allergens. Meanwhile I cannot eat a raw fruit or vegetable without getting near-instant symptoms.

If you feel well and your stools look good after eating #1-3 then they are probably not inflammatory. I know I don't handle something well if I have diarrhea or sticky stool (i.e. I have to run back to the toilet to wipe again ~1 hr later sometimes), or if I suddenly feel brain fog and/or can't sleep well.

Caffeine can stimulate bowel movements - sometimes i drink a strong coffee deliberately to "get it out" if i feel things are stuck. Not sure it's particularly inflammatory though.

These are good points, when I get into a pre flare I get lots of mucus , I eat almost the same diet daily all home cooked etc , I just figured maybe one of these is a factor

When I'm flaring, all of those will wreck me.

when I flare any type of coffee including decaf and oranges exacerbates my symptoms. When not flaring coffee might move my bm along.

Food and drink are not one-size-suits-all, you need to find out what your gut tolerates.
That took me quite a while, 2 steps forward one step back, until reaching remission.
Some foods definitely make my gut irritated and it rejects them, sometimes violently, they are not on your list.
I quit artificial sweeteners 10 years ago along with other chemical ingredients.
My gut loves carbs but not maize (never tried powder).
Why not eat regular food, not powderized food?

Being able to drink coffee again was a happy day but if my gut was unhappy I'd skip it until happier.

This is a question you can only ask for yourself via a food diary. FWIW artificial sweeteners are known to transform your gut microbiome for the worst by discouraging the good bacteria and encouraging growth of bad bacteria. I would sweeten your drinks with stevia instead.

Not only are dietary triggers unique to everyone but they can change over time. I spent years trying to eat broccoli or kale, etc., very often without problems then all of a sudden cruciferious veggies are now a no-no.

I used enjoy eating chocolate with no problem but that is how I started my last flare several years ago. I suddenly began getting symptoms out of nowhere after eating it but continued because I was in denial. Who wants to stop eating chocolate? But I continued despite all the evidence until I ended up in a terrible flare.

And it is a lot harder to escape a flare than eating right to avoid it in the first place.

A preflare.....IS a flare. Early stages.....but a flare. No such thing as preflare.
Just sayin,

It is very individual. I avoid any artificial additives in my diet. I read food labels very carefully.

When my flares go away it’s when im dieting and very low carb so the carb powders are gone at that point I should mention , caffeine is still involved in dieting phase same e seeeteners

I quit coffee long before I got UC but I still have tea occasionally and chocolate on a fairly frequent basis even when I'm flaring hard. (Note: I only go for chocolate without milk or emulsifiers such as soy lecithin, the latter because IIRC they are associated with all sorts of gut problems)

still flaring, actually its much worse and colonoscopy on wed, I cut out whey protein, got some unflavored virago powder added that today I think that's making it worse, problem is I try to hit the carb totals for the day and some of them around the workout are powder form, vitargo is barley based but it says gluten free... hard to say at this point, had some formed Bms a few days ago , now nothing except liquid sad.

been off caffeine for a week now too, , so eliminated caffeine, whey isolate I switched to a grass fed beef isolate

here is what I eat , maybe you guys can see something that I don't?

sups- CBD oil caps (this I feel got me in remission 7 weeks ago) , berberine just started 3 days ago, DGL licorice, multi vitamin, turmeric, ginger, PB8 probiotic

Meal1- 5 oz lean beef roast, 1 cup jasmine rice.
m2- 7 oz ground turkey 1 cup rice
m3- protein shake 1 scoop karbolyn 1 tbs almond butter
m4- protein shake 1 scoop karbolyn
m5- protein shake 1 scoop karbolyn
m6- 7 oz chicken plain, 1 cup rice
m7- 7 oz white fish 1 cup rice
m8- 7 oz 7 oz chicken 1/2 cup applesauce

Since you seem to be proving to yourself that you’re not going to eat your way out of UC, why don’t you just take meds?

I guess I’m just waiting to
Start on prednisone, xeljanz (spelling) got denied on my last Flex sig cuz there wasn’t active inflammation, hoping colonoscopy Wednesday will prove otherwise

I see. I think I missed something, then. Were you having symptoms at your last (clear) flex sig, or was that just to check on clinical remission?

Have you taken 5 ASAs? Have you been on any meds for your UC at all—oral or rectal? It seems a bit odd to jump from nothing straight to Xeljanz. And pred is a stopgap until you can get rolling on a long-term solution.

Point being, if you aren’t currently medicated it’s likely that fact, and naught to do with your diet, that’s resulted in your current flare.

Let us know how the scope goes.

Are you on any medications at this point, and if so, which meds and dosages?

I think you've tried everything diet-wise and aren't getting sufficient results on its own. You need some more meds to tame this thing. I wish diet worked 100% of the time and gave us all a way out, unfortunately that is not the case (a few success cases but not broadly repeatable). The idiom is "there's no point in beating a dead horse" and I think you are at (or beyond) that point on your diet quest.

Just on simponi? Did the mesalamines (asacol, lialda, pentasa) or immunomodulators (azathioprine/6mp) do anything for you? Often we are on a biologic like simponi plus other classes of meds simultaneously while we combat a flare (simponi plus immunomodulators, sometimes plus mesalamines).

Ohhhhhhhh! That makes more sense.

Yeah you probably just need to change your meds. For what it’s worth — not that I’m, like, crossing my fingers for a bad flex sig or anything— Xeljanz worked really quickly for me, and it’s worked really quickly for others, too. So something to potentially look forward to, if your flex sig is bad and you get the ok for Xeljanz, you may not need to be quite as patient as you have been.

YMMV, as with all things UC, but fingers are crossed that Xeljanz is a solution for you.

Quick update guys from
A while ago, so I finished my “cutting phase” where I go low carbs and now back into a flare of some sort. I actually have cut out a lot of what I used to rely on. I use no caffeine, I cut out protein shakes entirely and still flaring. Another buddy w UC said it’s the rice? I’ve never heard of white rice causing issues especially since brat diet calls for rice to rest the gut. Currently eating this any suggestions are greatly appreciated

Meal 1- chicken 1 cup jasmine rice , macadamia nut oil - still not sure on the oils
M2 ground turkey and rice
M3 chicken rice
M4 Karbolyn preworkout unflavored carb powered based off potato and rice
M5- turkey n rice
M6- lean steak
