Hello everyone!! Hope everyone’s having a great week so far.
I’m back seeking some advice. I’ve been on Canasa (mesalmine) suppositories for a little over 2 months now. They stopped my bleeding and mucus, and have firmed up my stools which is amazing.
What is bothering me now is (what I believe) to be a side effect from these suppositories. I take mine before bed, and obviously in the morning there is the inconvenience for the “expelling” of the waxy white liquid into the toilet. Gross, I know. However, I have been feeling like this waxiness has actually made it difficukt for me to hold in stool? Almost like it just slips right down to where I have to pass it l? I have been passing stool probably 3/4 times per day, but the stools are always formed (maybe on the thin side), normal in color, and low volume. It’s almost like I’m passing my usual amount of stool, just instead of 1/2 larger volume stools, I’m passing 3/4 smaller size ones, but with a slippery feeling that they just kind of shoot right out? (I know, again, gross)
This access in passing stools has aggravated my internal Hemmies a bit and, while manageable, is annoying. I was thinking of asking my doctor to see if I could try doing a supp once every other night, and then wean down to maybe one a week from there? I have noticed on the nights I’ve forgotten the supp I don’t have this issue.
Has anyone else had similar side effects with Canasa suppositories?? I don’t think I’m still flaring as I have no other symptoms.
Thank you!
Age 22, diagnosed at age 8 - remission from age 9 to age 20. Have had one flare per year since. UC and internal hemorrhoids, so proctitis tends to be my main issue.
Current meds:
-Lialda (3 pills)
-VSL3
-Canasa Suppositories
-Tumeric Capsules
-Hydrocortisone cream (for internal hemmies)

Normal to expel some of the melted parts of the suppository if pushing any time when sitting on the toilet to urinate or when having gas.

The coating of the suppositories becomes greasy as it dissolves, that's normal. I know some have got stains in their underwear from it. I'd say what you describe is normal.
Hemis can certainly be a hindrance with any rectal-route med. You could always try rectal-foams, or retention-enemas as those you just insert an applicator tip to administer, afterwards there is no pressure on the hemi (like a suppository might do) which might be uncomfortable.

Even Superman couldn't hold back the insurmountable force of UC urgency. But I bet those spiffy spandex shorts would at least hold in the mess!

Thanks everyone - sometimes just hearing "normal" is all I need, but the rectal foam idea is one I hadn't considered. I might look into it!
