Anyone's kids have UC or similar? I've had UC since I was 21, almost 35 now. My 8yr old has had 3 bathroom incidents today in a 2.5hr period. Now that being said, she was on a 5 day course of Azithromycin started on the 18th finished this past Friday (23rd), but it keeps workin up to and slightly beyond 10days(Today being day 10). I remember mine starting the same way, bathroom trips I couldn't hold, granted it was almost 14years ago, but I remember it went quickly to diarrhea, not mostly solid. Which hers has been. According to Bristol stool chart it would be a 4 for her, solid and good size, followed by smaller pieces later. Called Nurse and she thinks she's been holding it too long, but she wasn't able to make it from her room to the bathroom today, she had gas an a little cane out. No mucous no blood. So I'm not sure that's it. Any insight or opinions welcomed. Just trying not to stress. Anytime there is a bathroom issue my mind goes to worst case scenario. Thanks in advance.

My kids don't have UC, but I understand the anxiety. I have had UC for 2 years. My 8 year old didn't successfully potty train fully until 4.5 years. Now when he has a little bit of accident in his pants several times a day occasionally, I worry. When he clears the room when he farts, I worry. (My brother with UC did that badly pre UC) Sorry I don't have more clinical things to say, but if she has just had antibiotics, I would highly recommend probiotics. That could help clear up what is going on.
37, Moderate Pancolitis 1/3/17. Hosp 1 week on Solumedrol, Delzicol. Apriso, pred, then switched to Balsazide 750 mg, and Uceris 9 mg 3 wks. Minor flare in August, flare since Oct 2017.
Acute pancreatitis from mesalamines, allergic to Humira. Started Pred to bridge, still on it. Entyvio started 1/12/18. Antibodies, gone to every 4 weeks. Down to 3.5 mgs of Pred.

Firstly, I’d like to say that I completely understand the anxiety you’re feeling right now. My daughter is 3 and any time she has a loose poop or bad gas or a stomachache, I immediately fear the worst. It’s so hard to not go there.

I’d say it’s likely that the antibiotics bothered her stomach. I would definitely start giving probiotics and see if it’ll help to clear the issue up. I give my daughter the Culturelle Kids probiotics in the morning and at night when she’s having any type of digestive issues.

Hopefully she starts feeling better soon.

As she's on antibiotics I would chalk it 100% up to that. However, I would say blood in stool is the only indicator I would consider for an UC, as even those without an UC have occasional loose stools, a day with more frequent stools, bad farts, or the occasional accident, and more so with young children.

I get it that nobody ever wants is/her little ones to suffer with an IBD/UC, and with only one parent with an IBD, the odds are fairly low.

"One study estimated that the risks of IBD in first degree relatives of probands with UC were 1.6%, values that were even higher in the Jewish population. If both parents have IBD, the risk of their offspring developing IBD over their lifetime was estimated to be 36%."

So, that's saying the absolute risk of your child getting UC is 1.6% and the odds of him/her not getting UC are 98.4% with one parent with an IBD. If both parents have an IBD then the absolute risk is 36%. The odds are greater that that of the general population (multiple times) but are still very, very small in absolute risk.

Thanks everyone. I'm hoping it is just the antibiotics. The 1.6% that makes me feel better. She has been on culturelle kids but not every day, so im gonna put her back on them oncr in Am once in PM till things get back on track. I've also cut her sugar intake way down. Thanks again.

I see lots of kids with stomach issues now. Could be just that I'm more aware now. I am concerned about one of my kids as well so I know how you feel. I carry a lot of guilt when I think about passing UC on to my kids. You may want to schedule a GI visit just to put you at ease.
