Has anyone else flared after switching to Visbiome?
Background: I've had UC 17 years and have largely been in remission due to Imuran and Colazal. The 2 times my Imuran dosage was lowered I flared immediately. 2.5 years ago Imuran was deemed toxic to my liver so GI took me off it and said good luck, your next step is Humira if you start flaring. The only supplement he endorsed (with hesitation because he really only believes in western meds) was VSL#3.
So I started VSL#3, and had some initial pre-flare symptoms - lots of gas after eating, digestive symptoms, learned I could no longer tolerate eggs. I added in turmeric and digestive enzymes. As the VSL#3 started to work, the symptoms all went away. Turmeric is helpful, but on it's own I don't think it could end a flare. Zero symptoms after that.
Fast forward to more recently when I couldn't acquire VSL#3 due to lawsuit, so switched to Visbiome. Within a week or 2 (can't remember exact timeline because I didn't know what was happening at first), I had diarrhea, discomfort, started going more times a day. Then it got worse, bleeding started, so I knew it was a flare.
I immediately stopped taking Visbiome - the timeline is hard to deny here! And got back on VSL#3, luckily, since they were selling again. I added in qing dai, was more consistent with turmeric, and have been on a more anti-inflammatory diet. And the flare is ending now.
Wanted to share my experience and see if others have reacted negatively to Visbiome.
42, UC since 2002
Past meds: Rowasa enemas, Asacol, Imuran, one round of antibiotics, one round of prednisone
Current meds: Colazal (also synthroid and HCTZ)
Supplements: VSL#3, turmeric curcumin w/bioperine, qing dai, Liver Refresh, lutein, limiting inflammatory foods as much as I can, digestive enzymes if eating dairy
Current status: ending mild flare caused (I think) by Visbiome.
