I was just diagnosed with pneumonia last night. I was given the choice of a Z-pack or Doxycyline to take. I had tried a Z-pack not too long ago for a root canal, and I started to flare; luckily I was able to stop it. So this time around I chose the Doxycycline since I knew the other medication bothered me. However, now I recall it is related to Tetracycline, which if I recall, might actually cause UC. What should I do?!?! What have been your experiences?

I did okay with doxycycline when I had a respiratory infection, but my dr told me to take Florastor with it (hours apart). I’ve done ok with levaquin and cipro too. If you ask your GI for input they will tell you which ones they want you to avoid.

I do fine on zithromax, amoxicillin, clavulin and Septra and erythromycin with no GI issues...although, I had a horrific headache with erythromycin if I remember correctly.

Definitely take probiotics.

Let us know how you're doing.

Zithro and septra seem to work well for me, but you should avoid them if you have sulphur sensitivity (I don't). I avoid the fluoroquinolones like the plague because of the black box warning. Doxy is not too bad in the grand scheme. Erythro gives me hives and bad diarrhea. The -mycins in general are iffy with me.

Unfortunately it's hard to predict if an antibiotic will trigger your UC or not because a lot of factors are involved. I've taken abx sometimes and been ok, while other times have triggered flares... and honestly I can't tell what was different between those times.

There are abx that are known to cause flares. You can at least avoid those ones. However any abx can technically cause a flare, especially the more broad spectrum ones. Do they know what infection is causing your pneumonia? If they can get very specific with the antibiotic, then it will be less likely to wipe out everything.

I was told by a doctor that Z-packs are not likely to cause UC flares. But I have done well on all antibiotics so far, knock on wood.
