Hi everyone,

So I’ve been basically in remission for quite a few months now. However, the past few days I’ve been getting quite bad urgency in the mornings even though the stool is solid. I’ve got into a bad habit of holding it in as I’ve developed an anxiety about going...I’m just wondering could holding stool in for several days create an urgency to go or should I be concerned that I’m going to flare again?

Many thanks

Normally holding in bowel movements decreases urgency and can even induce constipation. You can definitely have urgency despite having solid stool and it may or may not be indicative of a flare. Let your doctor know so right away so they can run bloodwork and a probably a fecal calpro.

This is good advice.

Inflammation is certainly one source of urgency. But motility issues (including spasm) can also produce urgency. I suspect that while holding bowel movements can induce constipation for some, it can also have other consequences. The body and its feedback systems are not designed to have stool held in the sigmoid or rectum for several days. Once you are doing this all bets are off.

I would work to eliminate on a more regular schedule, and just monitor the urgency issue. If you don't see blood, the urgency may be less likely to indicate a flare.

good luck

Regarding holding in stool for several days....would you expand on that?

One can be flaring with urgency and no blood.
In saying that, the urgency for me during a flare always comes with rectal spasming and extreme discomfort. The spasming continues throughout the day, I'll have more bms in the morning and some during the day or evening.
