So I’m restarting imuran after about ten months off. I’m an old hand at it, as I first started taking it back in 2003 (or 2004? Hmm) and stopped only recently for a dietary experiment with my Gastro doc’s oversight, which I wrote about here earlier. Now I’m starting with 50 mg and titrating up to 100mg per day, with the requisite heavy labs for the first few months. I’m not sure what to expect when restarting this drug, tho. I’m not talking about scary vomiting or coffee ground BMs or other obvious call-the-doc symptoms. But I’ve been having a bit of nausea in the mornings and evenings. People who have recently started or restarted imuran (or people who have better memories than mine for their beginning doses of imuran), what did you experience?

I'm glad you asked this becauase it sounds like I wil be starting it soon and I have the same questions. I'm particularly concerned about nausea.

about 20% of UC patients initially experience a nausea when starting imuran/azathiopurine/6MP. That nausea is known to last a few weeks to a month, and then cease. To reduce your odds and ease it a bit, take your azathiopurine just before falling asleep with a snack. Having some food within your stomach when taking the med seems to help a bit for those affected.

IP, I’ve always taken my meds in the morning, with breakfast—didn’t even think of trying a different time of day. I’ll be trying that out!

The nausea has not been too bad so far, Sara, at least for me. It’s been noticeable, but not awful. (YET. Grrr)

Hi I just recently restarted twice. I've had the nausea and hair loss. Both I can deal with

Lol. You guys are really making me psyched to start this med! Jk. Good to know it is usually temporary though.

Had some slight nausea tonight after eating dinner (after taking the med this morning), but weirdly, drinking a glass of water helped. Your mileage may vary?

Good luck with it! You ever take zofran for it or anything?

I have some leftover zofran from my parasitical adventure this summer, but so far this nausea isn’t that bad yet. My son had some bad nausea this summer (sedation related) and one of his docs recommended pressure point massage. Not a success for the little guy, but maybe it’ll work for me:

Fingers crossed...
