Looks like a generic Apriso is finally available.

Hmmm. Maybe that’s why my prescription insurance dropped Apriso from the formulary for 2020. But If thats the generic Mesalamine ER I looked up prices on, its barely any difference in price from the brand name

Could be! That's generally the trend though, if there's only one generic for a product then it is only slightly cheaper than brandnamed is. It takes many generics for a product to drive down prices.

I was doing a little quick research, cuz I never heard of Oceanside pharm before as a generic manufacturer. Bear with me for a moment as this gets a little convoluted.
1.) Oceanside is owned by Valeant pharm.
2.) Valeant Pharm owns Salix.
3.) Salix makes Apriso.
So, I think this is a roundabout way of saying that this new generic of Apriso is likely the same as the brandnamed, maybe even made in the same assembly line. Exactly what Shire did with Lialda, they made their own "generic" which is the same thing as the brandname :-p

Not 100% certain of the above conclusion as it was the brainchild of about 1.5 minutes of googling. I'd have to see the pill codes on generic apriso and see if it is identical to the brandnamed.

Here's the real kicker though, Apriso was initially approved in the USA in 1987, and now 32-years later, the first generic is finally approved for it <_<.

According to this FDA link, there is one therapeutic equivalent made for Apriso, it is made by Mylan Pharmaceuticals and was FDA-approved November 20th, 2019:

For whatever reason these links don't work if you make them clickable so copy/paste the link below to your browser:

Mylan makes a number of other generics (generic Lialda as an example), their name I recognize.

Ha, maybe there are two generics for Apriso then, Mylan's and also this Oceanside Pharm one.

John your googling theory works out I think. When I first got Apriso from the manufacturer I applied to Valeant. Then it changed to Salix the next year and the current one is through Bausch.

I hate this little game they play with formulations and generics where a generic isn’t a true generic in the way we think of it (way cheaper in price). When they play games like that it just feels like we’re being scammed in some way

It used to be (and for some people still is) that your insurance company charges you (for example) a $160 copay for three months of brand medication, and $40 copay for three months of generic medication. Regardless of the prices of those medications. So the first generic drug manufacturer to make a generic for a specific drug takes advantage of this by making a generic that's one percent cheaper than the brand name. (I think the FDA gives the first generic manufacturer the exclusive right to make a generic for a couple of years.) If and when multiple generic manufacturers get in the picture the price might come down more significantly.

Remember that as far as the US government is concerned, the concerns of sick individuals are always considered secondary to the needs of large businesses.
