Hi Guys,

I had a 3 day flare up of my UC over Christmas. For the past few days I have been taking folic acid tablets and I am now feeling great. Not sure if any of you have tried it, i hope it lasts as this is only thing that has made me feel more human in a long time. It has reduced the bowel rumbling and BM's and less diarrhea.

Current Meds:
Mesalamine 4 tablets per day, Simponi injection 1x per month

I was taking it while I was on MTX and it didn't do much for me. It's great if you're feeling better though. I am happy for you!

I think it's in my multivitamin, and it doesn't help me. I'm glad you're feeling better though!

Knowing this condition, feeling good will not last, but I am hopeful.

I took it while I was on methotrexate. I hated my experience with methotrexate and I don’t think the folic acid helped me much at all. Glad it’s helping you!!

We're known to have higher odds of Folic Acid deficiencies, and perhaps that is why you feel better. That deficiency might make you more fatigued, as an example. It's a basic vitamin deficiency, which we have higher odds of having as IBD patients.

For the first few days i was taking twice the recommended daily amount = 800 mcg. & I was feeling good.

Today I dropped to the recommended 1 pill per day = 400 mcg and I feel a little crampy.

I know it is probably not related but it is just interesting as the Folic Acid I know we have trouble absorbing with this disease.

Your signature indicates you are taking mesalamines, does that include Sulfasalazine? Specifically Sulfasalazine can affect folate absorption, so some doctors recommend taking folic acid while on the medication.

BTW if it means anything you might be able to substitute folate because it is the natural form of folic acid.

I feel like getting my ferritin levels up is putting me in a symptomatic remission. I might start taking folic acid also.
