So I've had a colectomy and still have the rectum part, I had this done in 2016. But for past week I've had discharge coming out and covered in spots all over my forehead. This is something that used to happen previously. I just dont know what I need to do about it. Anyone?

Do you have an IPAA (j-pouch) or an end-ileo (a stoma with an appliance/bag)?

If you have an end-ileo: As long as you have a rectal-cuff, it is possible to pass mucus and blood from it. If you plan to keep your ostomy, then most do get a barbie/ken-but surgery to permanently remove the rectal-cuff and sew up the butt-hole.

If you have a j-pouch: It is possible to pass blood if you have a pouchitis.

You probably have proctitis in your disconnected rectum. You should go see your surgeon or GI and get scoped to see what's going on. You can use rectal meds.

I have a stoma and bag. I've had mucus before, but this has gone on for a while now and I've got spotting (blood).
I'll contact my surgeon and see what they say, as my last colonoscopy did show some mild inflammation but they didnt think they needed to do anything as I didnt have any symptoms.
Thanks for the advice once again.

You might need to take a daily mesalamine or steroid suppository to treat the inflammation within your rectal cuff. You still have UC within that rectal cuff, as such it can still bleed.

Are you going to be having take-down surgery for j-pouch?

Hi Q, I saw my surgeon a few months back and decided I didnt want a j-pouch, things are ok.. well as ok as they can be and I'm not sure I can handle going through any more surgery. Yes the night time wake up calls are somewhat annoying and I'm still struggling with it. But for me, why mess with something that is ok at the moment.

I can understand that. Im wondering that if you arent having further take-down, is there an option for the remaining part of the rectum to be removed and the anus sewn shut? I've read this is what some have done, but don't know if it's a usual thing.

I do have that option and it was discussed at my last appointment and I hear that a lot of people have done it. They told me that I would need to have it done within 5 years but new research has shown that the risk of cancer is less so they will just do a routine colonoscopy every year, so I can still change my mind at any time. I guess if I keep getting issues I will do it but I've had such bad experiences everytime I've been in hospital I'm really hesitant. Let's see..

Makes sense....and your quality of life. Maybe talking with others who have had it done would be helpful regarding the surgery and healing process.
