After months of being on prednisone, I finally finished tapering off of it a week ago. I was able to do this because I started Remicade early December and have since finished my loading doses. Normal UC symptoms seem to be gone, but the past few days I've been experiencing nausea and fatigue. It kind of reminds me of the nausea I felt when I was taking Imuran last year, in that it seems to get a little worse each day. This scares me because that was awful. But this time, I'm hardly on any medication (just Remicade)!

I'm wondering - is this a symptom of prednisone withdrawal or UC or something completely unrelated? One other possibility - I started a new birth control pill a couple months ago but maybe I didn't experience this side effect earlier because I was on pred?

Bah. Just when I thought I was finally getting healthy again. Please share your thoughts/experiences!

How long were you on Pred? Very possible that it is withdrawal symptoms from it. If you were on it for a while, it will take your body quite some time to produce enough cortisol.

Fatigue could be from anemia or possibly pred withdrawal. If you are only one-week post-pred then it is waay to soon to worry abbot that. Give it a month and see if it clears up, as pred affect lasts about a month.

Nausea is not a pred withdrawal thing.

I was on pred for 4.5 months.

So I woke up today and the nausea is worse and I just want to vomit. And now I have diarrhea. I don't normally get diarrhea and this is very watery to the point where it reminds me of colonoscopy prep..

Maybe this is something else entirely?

You could have a stomach bug or flu. We can get those too.

Being off of pred for 1-week does not mean you are 100% safe of relapsing into a flare either. Keep an eye on it.

You could be flaring, you could have c diff., or you could have a stomach bug. I get nauseous quite frequently and it really sucks. Do you have any Zofran or other nausea meds? You can ask your doctor for a prescription for nausea. Just a warning, Zofran makes me pretty constipated.

Sounds to me like you're still flaring. My symptoms come back a week after I get off pred if I'm still flaring. Maybe the Remicade isn't working? Your doctor might want to do a levels and antibody test. Imuran was a nightmare for me, too.

Were you on a PPI med while on Prednisone?

If the diarrhea doesn't go away, probably a good idea to check in with your GI Doc.

I read somewhere that for every month you are on pred, it takes 1 month for your adrenals to come fully back up to speed with cortisol production, up to 1 full year if you've taken pred chronically. So if you were on it for 4 months, it could take that long to fully recover, although it is worse at the beginning of course.

A quick google search reveals:

Symptoms of prednisone withdrawal can include:
body aches.
mood swings.
weakness.
extreme fatigue.
dizziness or lightheadedness.
joint pain.
loss of appetite.
nausea.

The diarrhea was awful yesterday but seems to have gone away today. Pretty sure that was part of a stomach bug, given the frequency and intensity. Still feeling depleted of all my energy today.

I'm also still very nauseous. Not sure if the nausea is from the stomach bug because I had it a couple days prior. I guess time will tell.

Probably is just from the stomach bug. Feeling any better today? Nausea can linger sometimes.
