Good afternoon! Its been a while since I posted, thankfully I’m doing OK on Imuran and Pentasa. I have good days and bad but most bad days my GI suspects its more IBS related than the IBD.

I am getting married this year and currently looking where to head for the honeymoon.

Originally we planned on Africa safari then Maldives but I then found out from my GI that I can’t travel to any countries that have yellow fever. So safari is out of the question.

Maldives however has dengue as do a lot of other countries. There doesn’t seem to be much advice regarding that aside from maybe avoid if possible.

My question is.. Am I being too paranoid not going to these countries with Dengue or is my body actually capable of fighting off this if I did get it while on Imuran?

I know this is not a transplant dosage but still.. Im on 200mg daily.

Appreciate any help,
Thanks

Africa is a big place. Not everywhere has yellow fever. Check Namibia (for example).

Ill take a look just in case..

@Sara14
You wouldn't go to Africa you mean?

What about these other countries that have Dengue which turns out is quite a lot of countries? Would you also not go?

Cheers

Well, I have no desire to go to Africa personally, but yeah, I'd never go anywhere with scary diseases. That's me though.

Here is a map showing which countries in africa have yellow fever:

Plenty do not...
I would check which ones also have a dengue fever risk too

Spent two weeks in Africa 10 years ago before diagnosis. I was in South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Namibia . It was my best trip ever. Listen to your doctor and if you can go I would go. Looks like most of Southern Africa is not effected with a high rate. My brother in law got dengue in central America and it was very nasty indeed.

I agree, i spent 5 weeks in Namibia, pre diagnosis, and it was the best experience in my entire life. I would probably go back if I had the money.

I’d love to go of course, I’m ok with not going to yellow fever countries but its Dengue Im concerned about because its in a lot of great countries such as the Maldives.

My GI only seemed to be concerned about yellow fever.

Realistically being on Imuran would I be capable of fighting off Dengue if the worst happened? From what I understand I still have a functioning immune system just not as strong...

Ah ok, I misunderstood because I interpreted the following:
"Originally we planned on Africa safari then Maldives but I then found out from my GI that I can’t travel to any countries that have yellow fever. So safari is out of the question."
as you thinking the entire African continent has yellow fever, which it doesn't. I certainly wouldn't write off the whole of Africa!! You can do fabulous safari in all the above mentioned countries. In Namibia travellers entering from a country with yellow fever are required to show a vaccination certificate before they're allowed in the country!
Botswana has dengue fever, I have a feeling that Namibia and South Africa do not, but you can check that for yourself. The hospitals in those countries are pretty good in case of emergency (assuming you have insurance), the thing which makes it risky is if you're in a place which is remote from a hospital. Again, you can plan for this. I would consider rabies vaccine if you will be near wild animals, and do check about malaria. The southern part of Namibia does not have malaria but - depending on the time of year - the northern part does.
