Hi Folks!
It's been a while. I'm currently in remission, but my Dr has scheduled me for a scope this week since I've been living w UC for 10 years.

Last time I prepared for a proper scope I remember the liquid was so vile I had a hard time keeping it down and was unable to ingest it all. My last two scopes were done while I was hospitalized so I refused to do the prep and only did clear liquids and an enema the day of - however I wasn't as clean as they'd like.

My question is: How does your Dr prep you for a scope? A friend just had one and her prep as miralax and dulcolax - much more tolerable than Go Lightly (or however it's spelled). Just the thought of drinking it gives me anxiety, and I'm thinking of asking (insisting??) the Dr to let me go the mild laxative route.

Am I being a baby?

No one likes doing the preps, but here are a few things I have found that makes them a little easier for me.

Eat lightly for a couple days before prep day. Not all liquids, but no heavy meals. Go low fiber, low residue

I don't like gatorade so I mix half the Miralax with plain water and then alternate drinking a glass of gatorade with a glass of water

I used to basically guzzle drinking the prep just to get it over with. Every time I did that I got sick. The last time I made myself slow down and sipped 8 oz every 15 minutes. I did not get sick doing that.

Since I ate lightly a couple days before I was cleaned out pretty quickly.

Good luck. Prep is never fun, but just take your time with it and you'll get through t.

I don't do the gatarade. I use white grape juice. I also eat very light for two weeks prior.

Hi,

Like you, I get anxiety over the thought of drinking that mixture. In the past I brought half it back up. But last month, I had a much better experience. I set my mind early to not stress!

I asked for Pico Salax and Senacot. No seedy, stringy food for a week prior. There is only 2 packages of the mix to be taken with 8 oz of water, 6 or so hours apart. The colder the mix was, the better and easier it went down. So I put ice in the glass, drank it like it was a strawberry margarita, then followed with lots of water, clear grape juice, and some apple juice.

I already lost my appetite with Gatorade, and ginger ale after the past several scopes. Lemon is not my friend anymore, so ice water is my number one. My scope prep was rated "fair" by my GI, but he never mentioned it at all. So I'm happy with that.

Gook luck, and keep us posted.

Thanks all!! Appreciate the feedback and support.

I've been reading up and drinking the mix through a straw is also recommended.

I've started the bland diet too!

I personally always request GoLytely after the Miralax prep made me very sick the one time I tried it. A former GI of mine who I really liked said GoLytely is the safest prep. I just chase every drink with lemon ice, Gatorade, popsicles, or lemonade to get the yucky taste out of my mouth. Good luck with your scope.

I only do the gallon preps. GoLytely is discontinued from what I was told before my last scope and had to use Colyte...ugh. GoLytely is the only one without flavouring, so I'll have to check starting now for my scope in October.

Definitely better through a straw....

Let us know how it goes.

What! When were you told this? That really sucks for me. How does Colyte differ? Does it have flavoring? I had GoLytely last in June 2018.

I was told when I had my scope in June....Colyte has flavouring it. The one I had was pineapple. Lots of sweeteners in it....ugh.

Maybe GoLytely is available in the US.

Thanks. Yeah, that sounds real disgusting with the flavoring.

I prefer MoviPrep, but unfortunately it’s not covered by my insurance plan this year.

Miralax + unflavored Pedialyte at room temp-- because cold drinks agitate my gut. I drink 4-6 oz. every 15 minutes & chase with a couple sips of coconut water or white tea. My gastro + veteran Forum member Judy2 (Jujub) advised the Miralax + clear electrolyte liquid, also CCinPA's light diet regimen beforehand + avoidance of seeds, skins, & corn for at least a week prior to scope. I start drinking the glop by 2 PM so as to finish purging by 9-10 PM, instead of running to the throne in wee hours. Good luck and think how glad you'll be when it's all over with and you can get back home to the usual pursuits. / Old Hat (39 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

I prefer the Miralax and Gatorade prep, because I can control the flavor and alternate flavors. The prescription stuff made me gag and throw up.

The Gatorade made me throw up. That's why I switched to white grape juice. It was so much better for me.

So it wasn't as bad as I remembered it. I honestly didn't check the brand - i think it was a generic GoLytely. It had no flavor. I mixed it early in the day then chilled it well and drank it with a straw - that was key. Worked like a charm and once I felt it had done the trick I didn't drink any more of it.

Scope went well and I there is no sign of the disease, thank God! Remicade is doing its job! She took many biopsies though so I was in a lot of pain next day, which I didn't expect (or remember being this way). I feel the bowel is getting back to normal, but I want to step up the fiber asap. I considered adding in some probiotics but so far I don't feel I've needed them.

Thanks everyone!

I'm glad it went well!

I think they still have GoLytely in the U.S. I did some Googling.

When I get a copy of my colonoscopy report, a get a laugh out of the line that actually rates the quality of my preparation. Frankly, after the procedure I dont give a $hit ;-)
