You’ll find a wealth of information if you use the search feature on HW. Many of the j-pouch members leave shortly after their surgeries because they move on with their lives because they are UC symptom free.

Just remember that many of the posts from members after surgery are skewed because they are the ones with complications whereas the successful surgeries are pretty much UC free.

You’ll see a pattern/theme from most posts of us saying that we wished that we had surgery sooner.

Generalizations:

Life before surgery: Uncontrollable flares and failing multiple biologics. 6-10+ bms a day, pain, urgency, accidents.

Life after surgery: 4-6 bms about evenly spaced out a day without urgency. You can hold it 1/2 an hour, 1 hour, or hours until it is convenient to poop. Pooping is quick without straining or pain, often done while peeing. The times align neatly with the frequency the average person pees. No more flares, no more meds, and no more doctors. Quality of life is good.

Hambo88, have you failed at least two biologics? Generally, surgery is only recommended to those who have.

yes i failed remi and entivio. now i am waiting for xeljanz. But i am thinking about very much that if will be healthy with xeljanz that maybe i would make the surgery.
Because entivio's effect kept about 2 years.
is there other side effect?
...6 bm a little too much for me...

Hambo, Keith made a great suggestion about using the search feature here at HW. Top right Custom Search, type in UC forum & j pouch surgery, a lot of posts there to read.

Take care.

It's a good time to learn about surgery. Just in case you do need surgery, someday.

Read the archives, 6 emptying a jpouch is not the same as a bm.

I can easily go 12-16 hours without needing to empty and I sleep throughout the night without needing to wake up to empty.

Emergency surgery will basically guarantee you a 3-step surgery instead of two surgeries. Being on a biological “could” also mean a 3-Step surgery but that is more of a preference of the surgeon.

2017 was tough year and last year with the dreaded UC monster before i had surgery[JAN 9-2018-APRIL 9-2018 AND AUG 21-2018].Having surgery was best decision i ever made.No issues for me,BMs depend on how much i eat-1-2-3 a day.Had UC for 33 yrs before deciding on surgery, quality of life was getting tougher.Last Colonoscopy showed a very diseased colon. My gastro suggested Remi or Humira and i said dont think so.They both lower your immunity and i was 58 yo with no spleen[helps fight infection] so i said to Dr i think its time for surgery.Keith here recomended NY Presbyterian and after consultation thats where i had it.Great hospital and great staff
