Hi everyone,
I had j-pouch surgery about five years ago. A few years before that I had noticed ringing in my ears when my UC had started to get worse. I was also very stressed about my health and may have had the ringing before, but never paid attention to it.
Anyway I think it has gotten worse, along with altitude changes and popping and some vertigo only when I blow my nose. Does anyone have this also?
It dawned on me to look up UC and Tinnitus and low and behold there is an auto immune ear condition though rare called Cogans. I have an appt in about 2 months with an eNT. I also had Pyostomatitis Vegetans when I had UC which is also extremely rare and Iritis in my eyes. Both of those disappeared after surgery - Surgery has been great for me - I have frequency but it does not disrupt my life.

I developed severe Tinnitus in one ear a year ago overnight. It was about a month after moving to 4x Lialda per day. Could be coincidence though, I just live with it. Went to ENT but he was uncertain, said I could get a scan of my head in 6 months if it wasn't better to see if there is any growth in my head.

Since its specifically while blowing your nose, it might be a good idea to ask your GP to see if you have any sinus/ear inflammation issues to start...a sinus xray that would include ears is what I've had in the past and revealed just that.

What you are experiencing seems possibly to be a eustachian problem.

You could try using a sinus rinse system....I use the NeilMed squeeze bottle system.

Hello,
I experienced a similar issue during a severe flare - one ear felt like it was clogged (similar to having water in the ear or ears popping at take-off) - this would not go away with chewing or yawning. The episodes would last for less then half an hour, every couple of days or so, no particular context. In my case it was linked to my body lacking salts/minerals due to malabsorption and the weight lost.

Good luck with the investigation!

I've been told that it's notoriously hard to diagnose causes of tinnitus (other than trauma), but to me, it sounds like you have some sinus inflammation/eustachian issues. Always good to check with a doctor - could be a minor allergy or something else - but it wouldn't hurt to try a sinus spray. I know for me, if my sinuses get really dry, it can definitely cause some odd sensations.

I've had tinnitus for several years now. I always thought it was from too many concerts... Thanks UC! :-/
