My blood result was Below Low Normal. Doctor has prescribed me VITAMIN D2 50,000IU. My muscles and joints have been aching more of late and looks like it is attributed to low Vit D. I have been talking multi vitamin pills but obviously still deficient for Vit D.

Do most of you with UC have low Vit D?

My GI doc said most everyone is deficient.
I was at 5000 IU for many years...now down to 3000 IU.

You should be on vitamin D3, not D2. More recent research has shown D3 to be better absorbed than D2. The idea is to raise your blood level vit D test score past numeral 30. Probably the minimum daily supplement for IBDers would be 1,000 units = 25 mcg. That's what my IBD gastro generally recommends. / Old Hat (39 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

Second the comment about D3. Not sure what your doctor was thinking, tbh.

I was not deficient two years ago but I was when tested a couple weeks ago. My level was 13.8 (normal is 30+). I had been taking a multivitamin and calcium & Vit. D supplements since mid-November but apparently that wasn't enough. I'm now taking 5,000 IU daily and Vit. K2 (supposed to also be good for bone health). I will get retested after about 3 months of supplementing.

Most UCers are deficient in vitamin D. Vitamin D deficiency is linked to autoimmune disease. The previous posters are right about taking vitamin D3 instead of vitamin D2. Vitamin D3 also allows your body to better absorb iron. A good source of vitamin D is cod liver fish oil which has helped me bring up my vitamin D levels.

Pretty much anything one reads says D3 and not D2. Maybe D2 in mega dosages than D3?
Haven't read about it tho.
