Been in an up and down flare for a year. I moved in September to New Jersey. My doctor who is older and office resembles something out of a bad 70’s movie, does not believe in blood tests and started me on a drug that I had no chance getting with insurance( xeljanz). Tapering from pred. At 12.5mg. He suggests Humira and I have been approved and have the starter kit.
My dad wanted me to see another doctor and offered to pay for supposedly a excellent GI in nyc. Went in on Monday and saw him. Probably his last appointment because of the virus. He spoke to me for 5 minutes not really listening or looking at my chart and suggested trying 6mp first. He thinks gi doctors are jumping to biologics too quickly for UC(says the Crohns is different) his thought is it’s been around for a long time and is cheep and can be very effective. He took a blood test and I am waiting for the results. I did get tested for TB and came back negative.
Worried about starting 6mp with covid 19
Humira seems safer on that front but still a concern.
If you had the choice what would you do? Pros and cons or either?

Thanks for any insight

I think humira is safer than 6mp as it only inhibits one part of the immune system. So I would go with humira, especially in the current climate. Plus 6mp is slow to work.

How bad is your flare?

6mp takes 3 months to work and requires routine blood draws as long as you're on it. It's a simple pill you swallow, generic and inexpensive.

Humira works in 6 weeks or less. No blood draws for it. Humira has a patient copay assistance program, highly recommended if you do go on it. https://www.humira.com/humira-complete/cost-and-copay

Humira is a bit safer in this CORVID19 thing.

I'm on remicade (sister med to humira) and 6mp simultaneously.

Personally, I would go for Humira if you already have the starter kit ready to go. I'm deathly allergic to imuran (azathioprine) which I believe is pretty much the same thing. Many people cannot tolerate imuran/6MP.
If, on the other hand, your symptoms are tolerable as is, perhaps you could wait for a few months until the covid pandemic passes and then see if you can tolerate 6MP. This may not be practical if you are steroid dependent right now. Being on steroids long term is never good.
Does mesalamine work for you? Have you tried Rowasa enemas? What is the extent of your colitis?

I've only taken 6MP. Worked great for me.
