Left-sided colitis, in remission for a few years now with 8gm of Sulfasalazine DR daily. Sometimes, I need to take Ibuprofen to control my migraine and that causes hiccups, never blood, just the abdominal cramps.

For the last 2 days, my skin itches as if all the places touched poison ivy, right from the back of my neck, arms, armpits, abdomen, groin to legs. All spots random and they itch randomly as well. Like in the morning, armpits will itch and then in a few hours, back of the neck and then legs. I also noticed that my sebaceous gland secretions (skin oil) smell rancid (pretty off). I do not have abdominal cramps or blood in the stool at the moment, so I am unable to figure out what the heck is going on.

Contacting the GI won't help as she would just send me to a dermatologist, and I will just get a steroid cream prescription (been there done that, without the skin oil smell though). This time, I would like to dig deeper to find out if there is any connection to colitis or something totally different.

Anybody else been through similar symptoms?

Thanks in advance.

I had a similar reaction but not as severe. It stopped when I switched to sulfa free rowasa. From what I understand, any intolerance or allergy can get worse the more you are exposed to something.

Are you a diabetic?

What other drugs are you on? Does it get worse after you’re in the sun? I had a sun-reaction to medication and that was the most miserable I’ve ever been in my life. The itch was horrendous and not even the steroid cream helped. It has a distinctive red skin rash along with the itching. They thought at first it was my mesalamine but I later figured out it was an antidepressant I was taking. When I stopped that I never had a problem with it again. I can’t remember what they call it now but some medications can cause this condition when you are exposed to sunlight.

Thank you both.

@C_G_K,
I have been taking Sulfasalazine since 2013 so I am not exactly new to it so I doubt it is Sulfa allergy. AFAIK, Sulfa allergies are usually more serious than just an itch.

I only have migraines as a diagnosed condition other than UC, no other diagnosed or undiagnosed condition, yet. I do take Verapamil as a prophylactic for migraines but again, have been taking it since 2012.

@FlowersGirl,
Yes, I do get a reaction to the sunlight (It is because of Sulfasalazine) but I have not been out in the sun for 3 weeks now, due to Stay-At-Home order in NY and this started like 2 days ago. So I am quite confused.

Skin complications (Rashes, itchy and dry skin) are in the top two of all extra-intestinal manifestations of an IBD. We already know our immune system is crazy with it's relentless attack on our digestive system, maybe it's bored and wants a new target?

I've had contact-dermatitis a few times. To mitigate it I do the following which my dermatologist suggested. Certainly, do shower at lower temps, use eczema and psorasis safe soaps, shampoos, towel off, and immediately apply non-scented moisturizer to problematic areas. Apply a steroid based anti-itch cream before bed. Use only laundry detergents safe for psorasis.

@iPoop,
My exact thoughts. UC has been in remission for a while so the system wants something new, psoriasis?
I have never used moisturizer as my skin is extremely oily but lately it has been dry so started using it. I have been using Clobetasol cream that was prescribed to me in the past. It helps but the location of the itch changes like every hour or so.

One more observation, in the morning, the skin itches like crazy but after BM, it settles down so clearly something in the gut, but can't figure out what.

@quincy,
I take a few supplements other than regular multivitamin, antioxidants like NAC, ALA, Vit C and flavonoids but nothing was added new. I have been taking this for eons. What I have not been taking is Metamucil+charcoal mixture. I have run out of Metamucil and hesitant to go to Walmart to get it.

Wow what a crazy illness this is. I now see why you think a trip to the dermatologist is pointless especially with the connection to bms but perhaps it's worth a telemedicine conference. It's possible you have a fungal infection or something else they may easily recognize.

I deal with tinea versicolor which starts at the base of the scalp and runs down my back, armpits, chest and arms. It is not visible in winter but itches like hell in the summer and when I tan it shows up as white patches. Not saying this is the same thing, just my personal anecdote. You could try an antifungal dandruff shampoo (selsun blue is best) on your whole body. Let it sit for 3-5 minutes before rinsing. Harmless experiment but it has a sulfur smell that is a little unpleasant.

By the way you can get metamucil and other psyllium products delivered through Amazon or Walmart online.

@Uniform Charlie,
I have been taking 200mg of Diflucan for 2 weeks now for systemic fungus. I have very distinct systemic fungal symptoms (debilitating brain fog and thick white layer on tongue every morning). Tomorrow is the last day of 2 week course. I don't have those symptoms anymore.
Have you considered using systemic antifungal for your tinea versicolor? I have a strong suspicion of fungal role in IBD, I am just not able to pinpoint it very well with the literature that I have come across so far. So I rotate anti-fungal herbs sometimes when I start getting a hint of my systemic fungal symptoms, but this time it came quite fast, pretty sure the stress of whats going on around us and adjusting to the new lifestyle exacerbated it.

Could itchy skin be a side effect from the Diflucan? If so, since you are soon off of it maybe the problem will go away.

Did you start a new bottle of any of your supplements recently? It's possible an ingredient may have been changed.

A mystery at this point. I hope it goes away soon

Delta I have taken Diflucan on two occasions but the infection just returns once finished. My GP doesn't approve of me taking it... not sure exactly why. Second time it caused upset stomach so I will not try again.

@CCinPA,
This is the first time I took Diflucan, so yes, very much a possibility. As I said, I usually take herbs but this time brain fog was so bad that daily functioning became an issue. So needed some heavy hand.

I have not started anything else or changed any supplement.

@Uniform Charlie,
Yes, it will always come back unless you address what is causing the increase. And for us, IBDers, messed up gut flora doesn't do any favors on controlling fungus in the body. Its a catch 22. I am very seriously considering intermittent fasting to see if it will help in any ways. Actually, since this lock down, I just skip the dinner sometimes, but I need to be regular with it.
