I submitted my sample to the lab on Friday morning and still the results say "pending". I have never done one before, so maybe this is normal? I am used to getting the blood test results on the same day. At the same lab I gave a blood sample on Thursday and had the results at the end of the day. I am worried that there is something wrong with the fecal sample, but wouldn't they have notified me by now?

It depends on the lab but the longest I've had to wait is a week.
At my last hospital they did all the calprotectin tests on Wednesday afternoon. You could hand your sample in at any time but if you handed it in by 9am Wednesday you'd get the results on Thursday. But if you handed in at 10am you'd have to wait 8 days till the following Thursday...
At my current hospital they wait until the tray is full (of samples) then do the test. Because it is expensive and something to do with centrifuges and cost efficiency. So sometimes the results come the next day and sometimes the next week.
Right now I'm in a clinical trial doing calprotectin tests at home! It's a bit complicated but you get the results in half an hour.

Wow, that sounds pretty cool! Okay well I will keep waiting and try to keep my anxiety at bay. Thanks for the info.

Hi I’m a lab scientist and work in a hospital lab. At my hospital we don’t perform the test in house we send it to mayoclinic - as do so many other hospitals and lab it’s sent out somewhere else. It takes about a week. If you’re worried I would call the doc and have them call the lab to see what’s up

Thanks for the responses, sounds pretty consistently that it takes a week so that sets my mind at ease!

Oh! Just for the heck of it I decided to log in and check on it for the millionth time... the results are in! Okay so the reference range is <=50 and I scored an 8.

So, next question, what is my GI going to do with this info. Hopefully I find out soon.

I’ve just had mine done two weeks ago. It took about a week. I’m in Toronto. I’ve heard that the calprotectin takes longer because they need to cultivate the bacteria or something like that. Anyway, mine went from 2454 in June to 125 last week. Waiting to chat with the doc to see what the plan is now.

2454! Wow. Well that was a significant decrease. It will be interesting to hear what your doctor says. Something must be working.

I'm wondering if you're thinking of fecal tests for bacterial infections rather than calprotectin? Calprotectin takes a while either because of the small number of samples meaning the lab only performs it every few days (because multiple samples go in the centrifuge together so it's most economical to do them in batches), or because it gets sent on to another lab. Should not depend on bacteria?
Other than that, congratulations with the huge drop. I'd say that's a very good sign smile

You’re right, poopydoop. I’m confusing it with the cdiff test. I was told when I was tested that results would take a few days as they had to culture. My calprotectin kits have been delivered to me (the last 2 at least) and I just book a courier to collect it when I’m ready. It’s goes to dynacare here in Canada.
