My disease is not under control and I have an appointment with a new GI doctor for October, FINALLY!

I'm not in crisis but things aren't good. I'm on 15mg of prednisone and taking a lot of herbal inflammatories. That seems to be keeping things at bay for now. I have a hard time going up in prednisone because I lose weight really, really fast. The protein wasting side effect is brutal. I have no other meds I can try though. I'm minorly bleeding, but it's there. There's cramping and pain. My stools smell like death, so more hydrogen sulfide bacteria, probably because of the blood.

My question is... how can I slow down transit time? Before this flare, I was healing and my transit time was up to 12 hours. I'm vegan so a faster transit time is normal, usually, even though 12 isn't ideal. But now my transit time is about 4 hours and I'm back to not getting through the night.

For the sake of absorbing more, what can I do to slow things down? People always talk about more fiber but I find fiber makes me go more often not less! I feel like slowing down transit time could also spare my rectum.

Could I take immodium, maybe?

You could try Imodium but you have to be really careful with that. Have you tried taking something like potato starch in water a couple of times a day to had some bulk and slow things down? It can make you gassy so start at a low amount, but when I was trying to keep a vegan diet I took 3 tablespoons a day dissolved in water. (1TBSP 3 times a day). I eventually gave up on being vegan and gf and added eggs back into my diet which also helped slow things down and I finally gained some weight.

I think that this herbal stuff may increase your bm drastically - in my case, for example, such things are a disaster. I sometimes talk with a girl on a Polish uc forum who had similar problems to yours. Whatever she ate or drank, she had to go to the toilet immediately. It all stopped after she took antibiotic xifaxan, she says it is a real miracle, now she isn't even taking her regular meds and has only one bm a day.

Interesting you mention xifaxan. I am working with a naturopath who strongly suspects I have SIBO because things aren't playing out in the usual UC way. It's also possible that I have Crohn's, but the symptoms look a lot more like SIBO.

so I think xifaxan would be good for you too. This girl from the forum says it is just a life saver for her. She was taking it for 7 days, two tablets a day. After that she's been having only one bm a day and before, she says, it was a real horror.

But the big question is, did her UC return not long after stopping xifaxan?

Sometimes antibiotics only work temporarily.

"Sometimes antibiotics only work temporarily."

and sometimes not -

please stay away from the herbal inflammatories ------- they can be ........ inflammatory ;-)

i agree with the ewa girl - ditch that herbal crap until you can determine what is beneficial and what's kicking your butt -

for what it's worth, i was a very strict vegan when UC invaded my colon - see what i'm doing now in my sig -

I don't know but I'll ask her. From her recent posts that i've seen it seems she's still doing very well

Curcumin and boswellia with prednisone have been a life saver. Not sure where you got the idea that anti-inflammatory herbs are inflammatory? Did you have that experience?

I've asked the girl on the forum - she took xifaxan in June and has been doing without any meds until now, xifaxan has helped her with a horrible diarrhea. As for herbal stuff, just like TroubledT, I think they may be inflammatory and curcumin may bring about bleeding if someone has a tendency for it (that's why I'm afraid of taking it).

That's amazing about xifaxan... maybe I should look into that, if it's appropriate.

I don't take regular curcumin. I take one called curcumin phytosome. It has saved me from the full on inflammatory cascade that normally lands me in the hospital and in hopeless condition. To each their own though, I know what works for some isn't good for others!
