I know this topic is a bit of a cliché, just wondering if any of you reckon you've had any success with turmeric? Is there any evidence to suggest it would help UC? I've started 1300mg a day on top of the pharmaceutical meds on the off-chance it might help a bit, let me know if you know anything about it!

You can use the search feature above, type in UC & tumeric to find threads relating to this. The forum is pretty slow these days.

It's yummy in Asian-Indian mashed potato fillings for dosa pancakes & aloo paratha (nan), which I can safely eat-- so I do think it has anti-inflammatory properties as a food additive. Try it if you cook for yourself at home. / Old Hat (40 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking Colazal)

On the advice of my gastroenterologist I have taken 4 grams of curcumin daily for several years. That's along with Entyvio and balsalaside. Very hard to tell if the curcumin makes a difference. I still have mild inflammation and symptoms.

I have worked with turmeric for many years. It has a very, very short half life in the body. So short that it's almost useless. What you need to do is get a type of turmeric extract called curcumin phytosome. The trade name is meriva. Different brands sell meriva.

Each curcumin molecule is encapsulated in a fatty, phytosomal capsule that makes it much, much more absorbable by the body.

This is the only kind of curcumin that has ever really worked for my UC. During flares I take about 2000mg per day and it really works. Most other curcumin supplements are garbage.

I went into a pretty bad flare this summer. In the midst of treating it with oral and rectal meds, I also added in turmeric daily. I have to say, I noticed the biggest positive improvement within 24 hrs of adding in the turmeric. It really felt like things calmed way down and I think helped me on the path of getting the flare under control. I’ve been taking 2 g per day and I plan to stay on it because I think it helps in conjunction with the mesalamine I also take daily. Definitely worth a try!

I make DIY turmeric extract using vodka (2tbsp in 7oz of vodka with an inch of grated ginger and tsp of freshly crushed black pepper, soak for a week, stirring daily) and take about 5ml every day. I definitely notice the benefit in terms of reduced inflammation. My UC is in remission so nothing exactly related to UC.
