ok, maybe that was a little over zealous scare tactic wise ---- but ------ hershey's cocoa powder is processed with Alkali - would someone smart (everyone but me) care to comment on this >

What does alkali do to your body?
Mode of action

Alkalis generally contain hydroxyl groups, which on dissociation in water produce hydroxide ions. Alkali agents injure the GI tract by saponification of fats and solubilization of proteins that allow deep penetration into tissue. Thus, unlike acids, they produce extensive penetrating damage.

should i give up my morning cocoa ? go back to bourbon ?

An alkali is the opposite of an acid. Alkali + acid = neutral. Many substances are alkaline, the first one that comes to mind is bicarbonate of soda. Whether or not it's a problem for you depends on what your body needs.
I think your cocoa is probably fine smile

Try Ghiardelli (several blends, including mocha & double chocolate), or Droste. I think they have fewer unnecessary additives. Also, Hershey's reportedly buys choco beans from sources exploiting child harvesters in Africa. / Old Hat (40 yrs with left-sided UC, etc.)

It's perfectly fine.
Natural cocoa is bitter. Manufacturers make it less bitter in a process that's been around hundreds of years. It has no effect on health but does reduce flavonois a little. This also doesn't matter sinc there are lots of flavonols in cocoa.

Try Navitas. It’s from the Netherlands and has nothing else in it. Most online vitamin retailers sell it. And it’s delish.....🤗 Also considered a super food, very high in many vitamins.

I live in the Netherlands and have never seen or heard of Navitas. Seems to be a US brand?

I am not giving up my homemade hot chocolate that my husband makes, lol. I have watched him make it for over 30 years & he never measure the cocoa, sugar, salt or vanilla. I have tried making it & mine just doesn't taste as good as his. For an extra treat I sometimes add a bit of Amaretta to it, yummy!

Chocolate is bad for another reason. It contains theobromine which is a nervous system stimulant and laxative. Chocolate is generally contraindicated in IBD if you consult most diet plans. For many of us, the saturated fat content is also a problem as it feeds the bacteria that contribute to UC.

I can live with UC, but asking me to give up chocolate is going too far.

Likewise. I fell in love with semi-sweet around age 3-- so the thought of yummy chocolate rarely leaves my mind. / Old Hat
