Hey everyone,

For the past 4 days, after a BM, when I wipe, I see black with a little bit of dark purple tint on the toilet paper only. None in stool. I am on mesalamine enemas daily, but have taken them intermittently the past 3 years. Overall, I may be having a minor flare with 3 BMs per day, slightly loose (no D on most days), nausea, but no blood right now aside from the black on the toilet paper. It's not a maroon color so it doesn't look like dried blood either.

What can this be? I thought about the mesalmine enemas, but why wasn't i getting it before all the times I used them and now 4 days consecutively. Can blood look black like this (not maroon)?

Just to be clear, this is no black in the toilet or the stool, only black mucous like substance when wiping! I contacted my GI and he said to send him a pic. Any thoughts?

Any change in diet...or supplements that contain iron?

Hello,

No change in diet or supplements. Just using the enema daily instead of a few days per week more recently.

It's hard to say except most probably stool mixed with mucus and the enema. You could try tonight without the enema and see if you have the same wipe colour as when using the enema.
Another option could be to do a stool sample to check for blood in the stool....which could indicate bleeding higher up.

Hello Q and all,

Last night I did not use the mesalamine enemas and there was no black mucous on the toilet paper. That is the most likely hypothesis then.

A worthwhile test...it's good you tried it.
